I think some people went to the pacnor for different reasons than the .45. Years ago shooting black powder there were .45s all over the place. It seems now that alot more deer hunters have turned to muzzle-loaders to extend their range a little bit. In many states they restrict the bullet size so a .45 might not be big enough unless your shooting sabotless. The average Joe isn't interested in shooting sabotless so the demand might not really be there. The reason you see so many .45s here at Dougs is these are the hardcore muzzle-heads! In all honesty the custom guns were probably the first to go sabotless with the blazing speeds. The .45 was still big enough to handle most game laws but still small enough to get them blazing. Some of the pioneers here thought if they can do it we can to. Bottom line is Savage is in business to sell muzzle loaders. The majority probably deer hunters. .45 to small in many states and Savage will probably never promote sabotless.

Well thanks rex, I always was wondering why. I no what you mean about sabotless, It gets a little more complicated for any one company to stand behind a sabotless over the counter rifle.

If Savage had offered it in .45 I would have got that without doubt. 50 caliber was, and still is, the most popular bore size for the smokepoles and with that comes all the associated components. They probably figured it would be easier to get potential buyers to invest in something they were more familar and comfortable in addition to the availability of a wide variety of components. Just my guess. I've really been thinking about a .45 but my .50 shoots so good I've resisted temptation (so far).

Same here DB- I am still tempted- with Blackhorn 209 my .45's shoot under"1 moa. with less powder and more speed so the smokeless would be awesome in a .45

When 45s first came out in conical/in-line shooters, speed was the name of the game. 2600'/sec was advertized: the bullets were 155g XTPs. Few is any got much over 2450'/sec anyway. Accuracy wasn't particularily good, trajectory was poor, hunting results were not very good overall. Even though better bullets came out, the maximum recommended powder loads(ex 70gs FFg often used) gave no advantage in any way, except recoil, over the 50 or 54. Especially with smokeless powder and the bullets we have today(both 45/sabotless and 40/saboted) the 45 and 40 have many advantages over 50s. That said, likely less than 1% of ML shooting is smokeless, and that just doesn't change an industry.

The fact is, if Savage did make a .45, it would come with the same ole' lackluster barrel as the .50.............Hence, the .40 and .45 Pac-Nor custom barrels. Just seat a bullet/sabot in a Pac-Nor vs. a Savage barrel and you will see the difference. Richard

Richard I had 2 austin and halleck rifles, the most accurate one, which was 3/4 moa capable and also shot just about everything I stuffed it with into 1.25 moa or less had the ruffest barrel I have ever seen on any gun, the barrel was like a corn cob, you could not clean it with mearly dipping patches in solvent and running them down the bore, this gun always needed a full on barrel dunking, and even at that it still required a lot of washing to get all the crud out. the newer one I had, had a much much smoother barrel, a couple of wet patches and this could would clean up with no barrel dunking, however it wasn't near as accurate, just because a barrel is ruff doesn't mean it can't shoot
