I finally got my repaired Leupold 6.5-20 mounted, my new Rexxer short starter and two new replacement parts for my spotting scope. So, today was the day for 500 yards with the .45.
The wind was from right to left at about 5 mph, the sun was at an uncomfortable 2:00 o'clock relative to the target and the temperature was about mid-80's.
From a clean barrel I fired three shots; two were very close to the left edge of the target board, maybe 4" apart; the third wasn't on the paper. I decided to call these "fouling" shots and moved the windage turret for about 18" correction to the right. I fired a group of three shots, none of which was on the paper. I thought maybe the right to left wind, at 500 yards, was pushing the shots more than I had previously allowed; so, I moved the windage even farther right to compensate. Three more shots, none on the paper.
That's when it dawned on me: The new diagonal on my spotting scope REVERSES left and right; when I thought I was on the left edge of the paper I was actually on the right edge; every correction I made pushed the shots even farther off the paper to the right.
I then sort of aimlessly spun the dial back to the left and shot one more time. Not on the paper.............quit.
Other than learning a lesson the hard way, it was a bust.

With the groups I have seen you post I would imagine the groups were a cloverleaf, just off the paper. ;D We all have had moments like that, it just keeps life interesting.

2 -4 inches apart is mighty impressive for 500yds. You will get them next time.

I'll bet you shot a nice little group if you could only see it! ;D BTW, how did those couple of bullet holes look at 500 with the new diagonal and eyepiece? Better luck next time buddy...........but i don't think you'll need it! KerryB

Thanks for the encouragement; I've had a shower and supper, my head has stopped hurting and the day nows seems, if not funny, at least tolerable.
KerryB, I was looking into the sun across water and there was considerable haze; not ideal. I tried the 28X eyepiece and it was very clear, but I couldn't see bullet holes. Next, the 53X eyepiece made the holes easy to find, but everything was so dark I had to work at it. The 40X eyepiece that you recommended worked like a charm. Even though the image was degraded by the glare and haze, I had no trouble spotting bullet holes. Thanks again for putting me on the right track.

Lloyd- what bullets are you going to use? Your going to put this long range shooting untoucheable for most of us here. You really need to back off,I mean back up, I mean move up!!!! ;D

Craigf, rain is predicted for the next few days, then wind. I'll go after all that passes.
It's an iffy situation: My "range" is across a large pond. A couple of families have been given permission to fish there. With the weather warming they are likely to be around the water's edge any time I show up. Technically, I guess I could either tell them to leave or warn them that I was shooting safely away from them; but, I would actually just turn around and go home.
Did somebody say "that's what makes life interesting"?

Rex, I only shoot the sized and knurled sabotless Parker's and 12/47 SR4759/A2015. I've had one outing with the XTP's and they group sub-moa, but nothing like the Parker's do for me.
The way I'm throwing the Parker's away off target, I may soon need another "life-time supply".

Harley One rough day but I bet you'll probably be the first person to produce a decent 500yd group. Man 2 shots 4" apart at 500yds is giving me a headache just thinking about it. That is an awesome start for sure. I'm tuned to your channel for the next attempt. Ed

I think the only reason Harley brought this up was the 80 degree weather. Thanks! It's a balmy 50 here.

Dave D, I'm starting to feel presssured about that four inches between the two shots; I don't have a clue where the third bullet went; could be 10" or more from the other two. I will try it again, though.

:)Lloyd don't feel pressured you did good your first time out at 500yrds.like others have said your other shots could have been in a group you just couldn't see them.i remember the first time i shot at 300yrds i was overwhelmed at that distance now it seem's like i'm shooting at 100.i think every distance is a learning curve and i've seen your long range groups and know you will be posting some nice 500yrd groups.goodluck

Thanks, Dave.
Richard, I won't be there, but I do expect to hear an account of how YOU did. Just don't take that .50 to the shoot unless you plan to trade it to somebody who doesn't know you.

Good morning, Steve. We haven't heard much from you, lately. I hope you've recovered from the storm damage. I've only shot one 400 yard group for 1.8". I'd planned to revisit that distance after trying 500 yards, but everything went wrong that day.

Dave/Harley, I am planning on start shooting again in a few weeks. Obligations, other factors, and clean-up(from the storm) have delayed resuming shooting. I plan on working on a viable 300-400yd load with the 45 sabotless and saboted and the 40. Hope to start posting soon. Thought I might try a 12/47 load sabotless in the 45 : just seems like it might work well. 11/75(110/4350) in the 40. Good luck you guys.
