Rex, Lilja barrels recommends Butch's Bore Shine. Here's a quote from their site. Might have to get some for my 7mm. Q. What does Lilja Rifle Barrels think of the use of bore solvents with ammonia? A. While we're aware of "bad press" associated with the use of cleaners with ammonia as part of the solution, we have never seen any damage in one of our barrels caused by the use of ammonia. The rumor is that copper-removing cleaners with ammonia will pit and damage the interior surface of a barrel. Ammonia is very effective as a copper remover. We use solvents, such as Butch's Bore Shine, to remove copper during the break-in. We routinely leave Butch's solution in the barrel over night too. Again, I repeat, we have never seen a problem with ammonia in the concentrations found in commercial cleaners, in either our chrome-moly or stainless steel barrels. This includes examination with our borescope.

I have never tried the Montana Xtreme but I just bought 3 bottles of it at Midway, on sale for $3 a bottle. I had other things on order so shipping was not really an issue. I did this based on dougedwards recommendations and others that have recommended it. I am a sucker for new cleaning solvents, I must have 15 different kinds now.

To all those who use Butch's Bore Shine:
You don't know what you're missing by passing up Bore Tech Eliminator. You could clean with Butch's for one hour and Eliminator would STILL remove more copper with just one pass.
I've tried both; have you?

Before using your copper remover, try Slip 2000 Carbon Killer for an absolutely clean barrel with minimum effort.

I've gone to Wipe-Out with the Accelerator. It isn't FAST, but you can leave it in overnight and clean everything out the next day.
Now, if you REALLY like strong, strong vapors, then Montana Extreme 50BMG may be more to your liking. It works, but I recommend you use it outside in a strong X-wind!

I prefer to first go after the powder fouling with Quick Silver power tune (found at your local marina) then attack copper with Montana Xtreme copper cleaner. When done run a patch with 91% rubbing alcohol to get the solvent out and then put some ezzox on a patch as a rust preventative.

;D It seems about everyone has a favorite cleaner, similar to preferences with certain bullets. That is what makes the world go around I guess.

The best cleaner by far is KG12. KG also makes a carbon cleaner that workd very well also.
All the test of line are accurate. No gimmics, its the best ive used and ive got a whole corner under my desk with 15 different cleaners in it.

Precision Shooting Magazine (2006) did a feature that is worth your while to read. Go to www.boretech.com and click on "articles and reviews". You want the first one listed. Then go to www.slip2000.com. Harley

Ive got a couple tactical/target rifles both built by Jered Joplin of Patriot Arms (His new company named is American Precision Arms). Both wear Broughton barrels with 5c rifling (canted lands) and with KG12 I have zero copper issues in both barrels. I tried the KG 12 and it didn't work at worth a crap. Right after I used the Bore Tech Eliminator on the same rifle and it got ALL the copper out.

actually the best for copper is aqueous ammonia(26-28%),per pint /one tablespoon of ivory dishsoap, you will need those yellow platex gloves & might want a surplus mask w/new filter. the 50bmg shooters use this to clean between strings@matche's as the 50 is a known copper burner. i elect to stay w/boretech eliminator as i have tested it against almost all cleaners that i have used in the past, sweets.barnes, butches, montana 50bmg etc on & on& i dont want the ammonia eyes. in regards to those built rifles most match grade bores do not copper as bad due to the internal finish is much better than factory over the counter barrels, you should not have a copper problem unless shooting a bullet with a lot of bearing surface, now im tellin you! ;D ;D ;D

Here is for old times sake. I like Hoppe's No 9. It takes out copper, just need several days to get it all. I just read an article somewhere on bore cleaning this and thats. The author stated he preferred to pass No 9 as the last pass to preserve the bore. He than stated that you could run a dry patch through a couple of days later and see the blue-green from the copper old No 9 got under and lifted. Right off I sort of thought that his high tech stuff didn't really do all that well.
I have a rather rough bored Model 70 that I put Barnes x bullets down at over 3k fps. I am experienced at cleaning copper from a barrel.
I like the smell of Hoppe's No 9. No one has ever considered No 9 as a source of firecracking,

youp, your post reminds me of a very accurate 22-250 that i own that has 10,000 rounds plus, still she will put 2 of 3 on a nailhead@ 300yds in windless conditions, the flier will still print within 1.6 in,if i take all the copper out she will take approx 15 shots to settle-in,so instead i use butche's to take only a little out as needed/when needed, every barrel is different just like us

IMO if a person hasn't experienced stubborn copper stains you really don't know what copper remover really does work. I have a Kimber 25.06 that for what ever reason is bad to leave stubborn copper stains and the Bore Tech Eliminator is the ONLY one I could find to cut it.

I was going to order some Boretech but they have a Eliminator and a cu+2. Which one?

|
|
Post by Harley on Mar 27, 2009 15:02:18 GMT -5
Rex, I just went to the Boretech site. I hadn't previously heard of the Cu+2. The specifications and directions for use appear to be the same; the original Eliminator costs more. I wouldn't know how to choose, except that I already have full confidence in the Eliminator and don't think anything could do a better job.
