Has anyone did a build on 722rem. action? The company in canada would not do a build on this action, said they were to old. I was going to let my brother have this action at a good price so he could do this build, but when he called about shipping the action to the builder he was told NO CAN DO on 722 action. This old action is smoother than any 700 action I have. Has anyone used one of these for a smokeless build from another company. He is really wanting to do a smokeless build, so any help would be apprecieated.

The 722 is the predecessor to the 700. The 722 and it's long action brother, the 721, started right after WWII and then was replaced by the 700 in 1962. So your looking at a rifle that is at least 50 years old. But the same guy designed the 722/721 did the design for the 700 so there is a lot of commonality. I think the biggest change was from the stamped sheetmetal triggerguard of the 722/721 but the action IIRC is pretty much the same.

I know the extractors were slightly different, and the triggers are a little different but the action should surely be strong enough for a smokeless build. The gun is at present a 25x284 and I have had no issues with it. Are these older actions to weak for a smokeless build, and have they been used for a smokeless build by anyone on this board?

I stuck this over in the wrong thread but,
The action is pretty much the same as a 700 right down to the barrel threads. You will have to open up the barrel channel to take a bigger contour. You might want to look close at the current stock to see if it will take the bigger contour. The Remington barrel contours were different with the 722/721.
Basically the 722 was more sheetmetal in the trigger, mag and triggerguard. Not real fancy looking. I think the just polished up the design to make the 700. I've only handled a couple.

A good friend of mine has one in .257 Roberts and uses it regularly. As Rossman40 says, it's just a less frills 700. It has a round bolt handle and stamped trigger guard. I've been looking at a few on Gun Broker and they seem to be decent in the price department. I think Remington made a transitional model that they called the 725. But it just had a fancier stock with checkering. If it was me, I wouldn't give it a second thought. You could have it dye checked if you have doubts.

Isn't most of the strength necessary for smokeless in the BP and barrel anyway?
