Hey fellas, I am ready to build a 45 on a 700ml chassis. I have everything now , except for the pac barrel, (DD on order), and have a few questions. Everything is already torn down, cleaned, reblued, and ready for new install. Bolt is done. I will be using the factory plastic stock for now. What are the chances I can bed with the tapered lug and factory barrel back on, and then get the lug back into perfect alignment when the pac barrel arrives? (First 700 taken apart and don't see why Rem couldn't have keyed lug to reciever?) Or, just safer to wait? No hurry, just twittling my thumbs. Thanks, Jay.

You could do that. What I would do is when you remove it from the bedding clearance with a dremel more material from around the sides and bottom so if it isn't in the perfect position when reinstalled it won't touch anywhere but the back side. I would also bevel off the corners of the bedding where the rear flat meets the sides and bottom so it can't touch on the edges of the lug where it's rear flat meets the sides. The lug doesn't have to touch in the rear 100 percent, if the edges don't touch, it won't matter. I hope this makes sense.

Probly the best would be to wait. As Fishhawk said the sides of the recoil lug doesn't really matter but getting in there with a dremel to touch it up is a pain (if you bed in front of the recoil lug). Even with a recoil lug alignment tool getting it back to within .010" can be tough depending on who made the lug and how it mates to the recoil lug alignment tool. Also with the Wheeler action wrench that has the cut-out for the recoil lug there is still some room for error. Then you end up with a slight bind that could drive you crazy trying to figure out till the lug shifts or it just pounds it's way till settled.
There are options like "pinning" the recoil lug on a 700 or cutting a slot and then just using a Savage recoil lug. If your not planning to take the barrel off again not really needed unlike say a benchrest shooter who may remove the barrels every year or two for replacement or to re-cut the chamber to refresh the throat.
