For whatever reason, the Wheeler scope ring alignment and lapping kits have been out of stock all over the country. www.midwayusa.com just received them last night if you are looking. Harley

Harley, with access to a lathe I think you can make the aligment tool fairly easy enough, By the look's of them on midway.

smokeless, I'm sure you're right; doesn't look like much to it. The closest thing I've got to a lathe, though, is an old drill press. I've got a kit on order; with luck I'll have the lapping done this weekend and ready to go shoot.

With the looks of the top of my receiver it will be worth the money.I'm surprise more people aren't more concern with their receivers right now but to each their own. We seemed to go to great extremes to eliminate minute variables but ignore to see the big ones. Sometimes I'm confused!

Rex, maybe people who are satisfied with their rifle's performance don't feel a need to do anything. I think that's a mistake, though, given all the reports of scope failure and the new emphasis on stress-related failure due to non-alignment of mounts.
I know it's another expense, buying the Wheeler product, but I see it as just insurance against having to send my scope back for another repair. I think it's important enough that I ordered a combo kit so I could check/align both my 1" and 30mm mounts.

Rexxer, if you want to see something try rolling a stripped receiver. You couldn't do a full roll with the older receivers but you can with the newer ones. Remingtons are almost as bad having bent tangs.
When I was REAL young a friend of mines dad was a pretty good smith, mainly did it as a hobby, that specialized in Mauser and 03 sporters. I can remember him getting a barrel shipment and he inspected each one and then rolled it across a table. He said that it showed how much the barrel was straightened. The better barrels went to his better customers.

8-)I will concede that if you're worried about your rifle you won't be satisfied. So with that in mind note it is possible to true and action. Now I didn't say it's easy but it can be done. I partially true all receivers before I use them on a conversion or custom rifle. So if your receiver has you frazzled true it. If you can't do it or can't afford it sell the rifle then buy another with a decent receiver.
On the subject of scope lapping: it makes a neat job and eases the mind if a ring on your scope is considered a bad problem but lately I simply bed the rings. It works as well as lapping and can be done with no special tools.
