My most frequent carry gun is a Taurus 85 (38spl) but this is more due to the quick clip-on nature of the holster I have for it rather than my perception of its effectiveness compared to the Glock 23 I carry all other times.
I really prefer the Glock, and am better with it, but it requires a proper holster to be comfortable and I have not found a clip-on holster yet that suits my needs so the Blade-Tech IWB holster takes longer to thread the belt and get it situated. I hope to find a quicker holster that is acceptable for shorter carry durations than all day.
The Taurus is a nice little gun but I really bought it for the fingerprint safe in the bedroom. If I'm out and about and need to defend myself, I'd probably fire 3 shots with a 38 before I even thought of pausing to determine if I needed to fire more. At that point I'd only have 2 rounds left in the 5-shot cylinder...

My primary carry gun is a glock 36, really not a whole lot more bullets than the taurus, just a whole lot more bullet.

I prefer to carry my Kimber Compact. I've always favored the 1911 and the 45, and it suits me well.

:)I've finally gotten my "final" handgun - Ruger 101 327 to go along with my R LCP(380) and NAAs 22M. Each has it's place. The 101 will primarily have usage as a pistol I can carry while bow/x-bow in AR where such carry is legal with a concealed weapon's permit. There are times when I hunt deep in the deep woods in N cen AR when having something a little larger than the LCP can be comforting.

I have a Norinco copy of the 1911 45 ACP. A friend had it NIB, needed $$, and the price was right. The only jam or failure to feed I've had with any ammo was some lead handloads that apparently hadn't been sized. They bulged the case a bit much, and would fail to lock up 2 or 3 out of 10 shots. I am really surprised by how well this Chinese 1911 shoots. I can hit better with it than any full sized gun I've tried. My Stepson is a Constable, and I've shot his Glock 22 quite a bit. I hit better with my Norinco.
For a concealed carry gun, I have been looking at the Ruger LCP and the Kel-tec 380. Gun Tests rated the Kel-Tec as high as the Ruger. I figure to buy whichever one is available when I have the cash in hand. I can't wear an un-tucked shirt, so I need something in a pocket holster. a girl, that works for me part time, carries a Ruger LCP. Perhaps I should shoot it a bit before I make the final decision.

On a side note, In Alaska I carried the Glock 20 in 10mm about all the time when I wasn't in uniform and had to carry my Ruger GP100 in 357mag to meet NPS requirements... Some of the guys gave me a hard time as they carried 44mag hand cannons while camping/fishing,,,, couple of times though when I was the only one packing because the Glock was lighter and easier to carry I had alot of really close friends when the bears showed up while fishing or camping,,,,,,,,,, bigger is better,, but make sure you will carry it

I don't know where you live but in Virginia open carry is legal. I didn't look to see where you are from but if you can openly carry a handgun that may be the way to go.

I thought I'd chimed in on this a while back. Looks like I didn't, but I would have voted for a SIG 239 40 S&W. Now or in the past 2 weeks I'll have to vote for a Ruger LCP .380. At least now I can and will carry every place except the shower! The LCP is small, light, and believe it or not I can shoot it pretty well.

:)OK, the final results. I often shoot my S&W K-22/tgt sights and custom wood grips. Over the past 35-40 years, I've gotten to where I can hit fairly well with it. It goes fishing with me and often off-season woods trips. My LCP is a very convenient carry gun and I do carry it much of the time. My 22 Mag North Amer Arms often stays in my hunting pack or car console. The 327 Mag is wonderful - Ruger 101/6-shot. Easy to shoot accurately. Love the 32 shorts and longs. Only been able to get "reduced recoil" 327 cartridges so far. RCBS has dies for it($97). I will get these. Haven't found cases yet but haven't looked real hard. The Fed cartridges I do have(reduced recoil) are silver cased. The gun is wonderfully sized and fit my hand perfectly. My inherited Beretta 32 auto that my father got off an Italian officer( in WW2), incidentally, he was dead, is a far cry from these great guns. I can foresee possibly, a nice 6-7 1/2 " custom made or even Ruger re-barreled 327 way down the road. Recommendations on where to get reloading supplies for the 327 Mag, not the 32 H&R Mag , nor 32 s or l?

I continue to appreciate the Ruger 101/327. Perfectly sized for me. Choice of 4 different cartridges. It just feels right.

I had to dig out the paperwork on these to see when it was that I did buy them, but in March of 1994 I bought a Beretta 96D Centurion 40S&W and a Beretta 21A Bobcat 22Lr and have been carrying them both since the day I brought them home with me.
Here's a joke I received the other day in a email, thought I would share it with all of you.
An Idaho traffic stop . . . .
A guy makes a rolling stop at a stop sign, and gets pulled over by a local policeman.
The guy hands the cop his driver's license, insurance verification, plus his concealed carry permit.
"Okay, Mr. Smith," the cop says, "I see your CCW permit. Are you carrying today?"
"Yes, I am."
"Well then, better tell me what you got."
Smith says, "Well, I got a .357 revolver in my inside coat pocket. There's a 9mm semi-auto in the glove box. And, I've got a .22 magnum derringer in my right boot."
"Okay," the cop says. "Anything else?"
"Yeah, back in the trunk, there's an AR15 and a shotgun. That's about it."
"Mr. Smith, are you on your way to or from a gun range...?"
"Nope."
"Well then, what are you afraid of....?"
"Not a damned thing..."

Stumbled onto two S&W 642 38sp 1 7/8 barrel new in the box but old enough stock not to have the internal lock. I did some trading and brought home two. One for each of my twin daughters. 5 shot light weight frame no hammer nice little guns. Warren

Glock 21sf, Blackhawk pancake holster- little large but I wear clothing to cover. I have thought about a light weight hammerless 38 as I have to clean the lint from the Glock quite frequently.

Been doing a little research on a smaller CC weapon, [want to retire my 4006] and have 3 that I picked out, all in diff. price ranges. no.1....Ruger SR 40C at $375....no.2....Ruger LC9 at $350 with laser grip or $280 without.....no.3....Keltec PF9 at $235. Anyone have any experience with any of these. Haven't had a chance to handle any of these yet but would like some pros and cons for each. thanks

IMO, weight is far more important than size.
Having carried for over thirty years on and off duty, I eventually figured out that a heavy gun is harder to carry than a light one. After carrying everything from 1911's to compact Glocks, I finally settled on a Titanium/Scandium 4" 44mag.
The S&W 329PD has been my everyday carry gun for the past 6 or so years. It lives in a DeSantis hip holster and is filled with cast 240 SWC bullets loaded to 1000 fps. In a speed loader, I carry six Buffalo Bore Lower Recoil hard cast 255 grain magnums that cronograph at 1300+fps.
When I camp in bear country, it only takes a few seconds to change loads. I also keep a few of the CCI spread shots for hikes in snake country. As my eyes (and the rest of me) got old, I find that the Hi-Viz sights on the gun are easier for me to pick up than anything short of a red dot scope. A Hawaiian shirt in the summer keeps the whole rig hidden.

I picked up a LCP a few weeks ago for carry in my shorts pockets,,, better than nothing and so far I have shot 200+ rounds of different ammo and no problems, carries well with a small pocket holster, as much as I love the Glock 10mms and my baby glock9mm they are just a little large and heavy for CC hiking and mountain biking in the heat of summer

I only need two:
Smith and Wesson M&P Pro9 with Insight M3: goes on road trips or if I know I am going out at night.
Smith and Wesson M&P Shield 9x19mm: can be concealed no matter what I'm wearing and is the only really shootable sub-compact out there.

It's been 5 yrs since I posted my comments and I've had a big change of plans 2 yrs ago. I bought a Ruger SR9 in 9mm. I bought it to have a fun gun to shoot alot. And I have shot it a lot.
What a great mid sized gun that packs really well but also feels substantial when you aim and shoot it. I have put well over 1500 rds thru it and it rarely malfunctions. When it does, it always has been with low price target rounds and hand loads I've started to make. (about the same rate....1 in 75 or so jambs)
With over 100 rds of pricey Cor-bon 115 gr JHP's it has been flawless and accuracy outstanding with that hot load.(advertised at 1350 fps) It also ejects these rds about 10 feet away instead of 4-5 feet away with the target stuff. I don't want to beat the gun up too bad at the range so I'll keep the practice to the mild loads and accept a stovepipe now and then.
I still love carrying the GP100 4" .357 Mag but it now feels like a brick compared to this gun. I also like the 10 +1 of the semi. Don't even feel like I need an extra mag.
They make the SR45 too and it's basically the exact same size in every way and 10+1. That is on my list. However, the 9mm is so controllable in rapid fire that it may out-weight any advantages of the stopping power of a .45 by being able to pinpoint shots fast.
One of the best parts of this new carry gun is I find that I am carrying more than ever. Basically all the time except at the office...d**n company policy!

Sig P938, with a spare barrel converted to 356 TSW. Bullets turned out of copper rod, hollowpointed and a big hollowbase cavity, 45 grs, 2200 fps and the same 500 ft lbs of power as a 4" 357 Mag, but with 9x18 Makarov recoil. 6 x 4.5" gun, 15 ozs. Perfect for the front pants pocket rig.
