The crappie are starting to turn on here in Southern Illinois. I even caught a few largemouth bass yesterday. Eagles were circling overhead and the bluebirds were singing. Little bit of heaven on earth! Here are a couple of photos of one of my favorite lakes (Devils Kitchen). I am surrounded by the Shawnee National Forest which has several lakes that look just like this. Cedar Lake is only a few minutes from my property, and Little Grassy, Crab Orchard, Kinkaid, and Lake of Egypt are only a little further. All of them are incredible fisheries. Yea, i consider myself lucky.............. And i am less than two months from retirement, so you know what that means..........fish, eat, sleep, fish, eat, sleep......... ;D ;D ;D

That is an eye opener for me. Some how I have a vision of every lake in Illinois wall to wall cottages. Similar to lakes in southern Wisconsin.
Definately has me itching for some open water fishing. Last time I checked there was two feet of snow on top of my boats.

I know anticipation is boiling within for that retirement day Kerry. Beautiful pictures of what appears to be a great place to spend quality time. Here we had a warm spell, peaach trees bloomed out, elm and maple leaves popped through, wild flowers stuck their heads out. Today it is snowing, sleeting and freezing rain all mixed. The temp. this afternoon is below freezing and tonight a hard freeze is expected. Winter keeps fighting to hold spring back. But soon it will come.

What a difference a few miles makes. I live in southern Wisconsin and was getting big crappies thru the "ice" yesterday 3-16-09. Going to try again after work, but the ice is going real fast.

We have many, many lakes here in Southern Illinois and the only one that has houses on the shore is Lake of Egypt. The others are in Shawnee National Forest lands, or lie within Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge boundaries, etc, where they are protected against houses, people, and other destructive forces. These rocky outcrops in my photos are very small compared to many other areas on this lake and several others. I will take a few more photos later this spring to give you guys a whole new perspective on what Southern Illinois is really like! ;D
