- We are indeed a lucky lot. We have stock Savage barrels and now PacNors, Savage-Barrels/McGowens, Kriegers, SMI "replacement' barrels for our Savages. I wanted to try something different and add something new to the mix. My wife has always said I am a little different, I'm not quite such what she means by that. Anyways I have on order being built a .45 Brux cut rifling barrel to spin on the Savage action. The twist will be 1 in 28, primarily for 195 and 200 grain .40 cal bullets in Harvestor blue sabots. Now the difficult part for me, I do not plan to use the Savage Thumbhole stock that came with the gun but have a Richard's Microfit stock also coming, that and the barrel may be 5 months out. Plus then I have to do all the stock prep and that could take a month. Then the weather will be hot for shooting. All you guys with your McGowens will be shooting little bugholes before mine even sees the light of day. Also getting interrrupted fluting in a stainless barrel. I will keep you posted but it will not be soon.

I have seen a couple with the interrrupted fluting. The examples I have seen seem to really take the weight off but I wonder about strength. I think Brux is the only barrel maker offering it.

I think the fluting is away from the powder area and ends before the muzzle. It has seemed to work for centerfires, hopefully also with the MZ. I always seem to be trying something early. A wise man once said, don't be the first and don't be the last. I should follow that advice perhaps.

Jims. I'm proud of you it's people that experiment that have made smokeless what it is to day. I like some don't think it is at a peak yet. Just because the old timer's are happy with the Plato they reached and that is great they have great feed back and a wealth of knowledge. I will be back to you on the plug so I have everything in line so as not to tie you up to long. I'd also like to know about the interest from other remembers on the board so I can plan a run. I think it would be a great plug for the savage and 700ml conversions. And to me it would be showing great respect to one of the great innovators of smokeless m/l. Jon

Jims, I was wondering when Brux was going to be brought up? I have been surfin the web at custom gun building sites and Brux seems to be one of the higher end barrels available. Good luck on the build. Too bad you have to wait so long ,anyway the board will be waiting to see how it works out for you. Waiting, Greenhorn

Jim. I have always thought about a cut barrel as apposed to a button barrel. Supposedly a cut barrel you could start with a straight barrel shoot and if happy do what ever taper fluting or what ever later. As apposed to a button barrel you are supposedly building up stress in the barrel. I just can't go with the wait time. Keep up with the good work and keep experimenting it has made muzzle loading smokeless what it is to day. Lets face it with the new subs they are coming out with now the smart people will go smokeless they are almost there now. Jon

Jon: I do not think there is any harm in saying this now as they are supposedly close to announcing it but McGowen in April or thereabouts is going to start producing cut rifled barrels. They were just not sure of the price or the availabiltiy date but you guys on the fence might want to get a cut versus button barrel from them. I am not sure if they still have decided those things but if gives another option. Choices, choices. I think the McGowen produces a fine barrel, many centerfire users are very happy. I just went with the Brux after intially leaning towards the McGowen/Savage-Barrels as I did not know how long before they were up and running with that and I wanted the interrupted fluting. I think you guys getting the McGowens will be shooting well soon.

To show everyone, this is what interrupted fluting looks like. I have seen it done with different cutters. I have seen it done with a ball nose end mill so it looks like a golf ball.

Also thanks Rossman for posting that. I did not know how to show it. I am looking forward to getting the same. Sinman has been a good fellow to work with.

Here is another example of the Brux interrupted fluting, it looks way better in person.

It is so interrupted on the end you can see right through to the grass. ;D Nice looking muzzle brake, a muzzlebrake on a muzzleloader. That might be the real ticket for the guys shooting those heavy weight bare bullets in their 45s. The photo is nice, I am sure the real thing will be even nicer.

I got word from SinArms (Devin Sinner) that the .45 Brux barrel got to him late last week. He hopes to make some chips and work his magic on it this week. Anticipation.

It will be really interesting to see how well the slower twist shoots. I know Del at MMP shoots a NULA 45 with a slower twist and loves it. Ive really been wanting to try a 1-24 or even 1-26 just to be different.

The Richard's Microfit stock arrived today. As is the case with them many hours of work will be needed before it is road worthy. When everything is done and completed and assembled I will show the combo.

The stock was actually considerably better than some in the past so it will free up some time on it but still some weeks away.

Getting closer to getting the stock done and I needed to order extra high rings to clear the new barrel, they are not in yet. The old Leupold highs were not high enough.

The photos you see are the SinArms, Brux barrel. The stock is the stock I finished. No stain on this one. I also showed the curved aluminum pillars I added in the stock. I also got my super high rings today, I needed that to clear the barrel. Everything is working well but I have to relieve the stock because the trigger binds and will not fire when tightened, works well when loose.
I can give more details if anyone is interested. jims

Very nice Jim. Those pillars are so pretty seems a shame to bed them out of sight. Do you plan to steel wool the stock? I always do when I have a hunting gun with a shine.

Jims
That’s one beautiful and unique looking muzzle loader. I would be afraid to take such a work of art into the field and tarnish its looks. But I would definitely give it a showing and workout at the range. Of course it would be transported in an aluminum case.
Nicely done project.

to DB: Some I do, I hunt out of a fixed stand and even my glossy stocks have never frightened any deer, I am over 25 feet high. This is going to be a "girls" gun for my youngest daughter so I had to pretty it up some for her.
