Howdy I am new to the board but was interested in adding a .54 cal flintlock to my stable and have never owned a Lyman. I have a few .50 cal flintlocks but never owned a .54 cal. Any input on the .54 cal Lyman Deerstalker is appreciated. Thanks in advance Encore28

Welcome encore28! I have a caplock Lyman deerstalker in 50. It is really nice for sidehammer gun. It shoots really good with 300gr saboted loads. I use real BP, Swiss for hunting and Kik or Blackdiamond for practice and plinkin, so the barrel has to be swabbed between shots for the sabots but I use "belted" 290 gr. for 2nd shots. Usually the 2nd shot is for another deer later in the hunt. My son in law has a caplock .54 Cabelas and it really has knockdown power. I'm guessin with the "flinter" you'll be shootin PRB? It will have plenty of power on out to 100 yd. plus. Never known of a Lyman that wouldn't shoot. Again welcome. Lurk about and use the search and check out the tips n hints forum. Lots of info to seek and give and all look forward to gettin to know ya. Best, 10 ga

10 Pointer Thanks for the welcome and info........... I will most likely be using prb's or maxi balls with real BP. I am new to Lyman being T/C has dropped all the .54 cal muzzleloaders from their catalog. I have been wanting a .54 for some time now and will be buying one this Spring. Thanks again for the warm welcome and input!!! Encore28

My dad has a Lyman Great Plains Rifle with the hunter barrel 1:32 twist that thing loves the Remington 400 gr. lead conicls with about 90 to 110 gr. Pyrodex. His is a caplock by the way. His first barrel was to 1:60 twist and would print awsome round ball groups with 100 gr. Pyrodex. Good luck and Welcome.

I talked to a guy that worked at a gun shop and he bought $5000 custom flints and was in a club that didn't even allow caplocks on their range and he said that the Lyman great plains are nice rifles.

Welcome, Encore28.
I have a caplock .54 Trade Rifle which shot the minnies great with Goex. If it were possible to get real black powder around here, I would probably still be shooting it, but it just plain didn't like any of the substitutes tried. T7 is out because I refuse to ever fight that crud ring again!! (Used it for a short time in the Encore.)

Wood to metal fit is pretty crude compared to TC but functional. How do they shoot? Ive owned two and they shot really good with round ball. Never tried conicals in mine. When the price jumped up on them many years back I sold mine and put my money in TC just because I like the fit and finish on them better. Good rifles if you can find them at a fair price. .54 cal is the way to go with a 1:60 twist if you want to shoot traditional patch and ball.

You need to decide what you want..........a conical bullet barrel or a round ball barrel. Don't fall for the age old lie that a 1:48 twist is good for both, it ain't. Oh you'll be able to shoot both types of bullets but the grooves will be to shallow for a PRB and to deep for a Maxi-ball or saboted conical bullet to allow full power loads with good accuracy. You'll be able to shoot PRB's at about 60 grain loads with good accuracy and your Conical bullets will shoot best with no more then 80 gr of powder. If you want to shoot fast and accurate you will have to make up your mind what you want to shoot and stick with it. If it were me I wanted to shoot big heavy conicals I would find me an old T/C rifle with the right sized barrel channel and put one of these in it. www.gmriflebarrel.com/productdetail.aspx?id=323938If you want a accurate round ball barrel I would buy one of these. www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/item.asp?sku=000156031103Or if you want a flinter then here it is.......... www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/item.asp?sku=000156031105If it were me I would buy the kit and build my own. Oh, that's right, I already did that years ago and I love my Lyman Great Plains rifle. Smokepole50 Smokepole50

I have had great experiences with my .54 GPR. One in cap, and the other in flint. I prefer to shoot 80g (volume) 3f black out of both. Both were kits, one is a browned barrel and the other I left white steel for the natural patina look.
