Got my first coyote yesterday,It was the first one that I have even seen while hunting. Busted her with a savage 22/250 running towards my decoy at 100 yds. Think I am hooked on hunting them now.

I've been itching to catch one in my neck of the woods. I haven't run across any yet, but I hear about them being seen in counties all around me. I have hunted them before in Lancaster, PA though and it was ALOT of fun ;D. Good shooting.

Looks to be a nice size dog....I know many scorn coyote, and I have too. I think they are an "OK" predator as long as they are kept in check. Just like anything else. I have witnessed more coyotes "mousing" then I have witnessed taking down deer. They also do a great job mopping up road kills around here.
I have only killed 4 in my life....2 with my Savage ML, 1 with my .243 and 1 with a .22 hornet when I was young and there weren't many around my parts. Hunting them with dogs is very popular here. Many guys will get together with many packs of dogs and run them all day. Many times it's the fresh pack of dogs that catch an exhausted coyote and get the kill.
In general, coyotes are similar to wolves in terms of the pack similarities. I once read that all the yowling and screeching we all hear in the middle of the night are young and inferior members paying respect to an alpha male or female returning to the den. In ways, they are very interesting. Obviously very effective in procuring meals as a group....kinda like a well honed team of deer hunters doing a drive.
I shoot them when I can...just to remind them who is at the top of the food chain

This year, all through deer season, we heard Yotes yammering almost every morning and evening. Sometimes we'd hear packs of 4-8 from 3-4 different directions. All this activity convinced me to try some serious Coyote hunting. I have an old model Johnny Stewart caller that uses cassette tapes. I have only used it for Snow Geese during the Conservation Order hunting. It hadn't been used in so long that the batteries wouldn't take a charge. Put new batts in it, and caught a newer caller on sale at Midway, and ordered it along with several extra sound cards. So far, I've been out 6 times. The score is Yotes-6, Boarhog-Zip! I did have a pack howling back at me one evening, but they wouldn't come in. I plan to give it a serious try next weekend since season ends on the 28th Boarhog

Buy a stuffed rabbit, tie 50 or 60lb mono to it ,throw it over a fence and yank on the mono every time the rabbit is screaming. It drives yotes nuts ;D

A couple can sound like a dozen. Someone said they just bark and then run forward and chew th sound all to pieces. I have killed a few while hunting other animals. They just happened to provide me a shot and I took it. One a coydog that was black with a bit of white on chest.
