I have never really shot any handguns to any measure... I have owned a Ruger super single 6, 30 years ago..Ruger Black Hawk .357..sold them. A couple AMT .380 backup's ..when I thought I needed to carry one..A Buckmark..One time aDetonics 45 that would fit in your back pocket.. And a Ruger p90 .45 auto.Sold em all... didn't need them...Matter's of fact at one time I sold every gun I had. Started over.one by one. I bought another super single six about 10 years ago..SSversion..I love it. Cant hit nothing with it.. But it go's POP and dirt flies ;D. So these buddies talked me into going on a hog hunt next winter in Texas. They had a blast literally...They used Big hand guns, I committed to go, Went today and put some money down on a Ruger Super Red Hawk SS 9.5 inch barrel. Guess I better learn how to shoot it .... I think I got a fair price on it. Is 700.00 pretty fair? Any advice as to what I have gotten myself in to? My buddy says it cost about a buck every time he pulls the trigger... I told him that ain't nothing to todays 2.75 a pop deer slug's. And another ? The dealer told me this things effective range was about 125 yds. For real? Wish me luck..It will be a few weeks before I finish paying for id..LOL Drop

What Caliber? Ive got one in 480 Ruger. Very good gun. Dependable and accurate once you learn how to shoot it. You won't be disappointed. I think I paid around $800 for mine. If you mount a scope on it get a good one like a leupold 2 or 4X and you'll be fine. I've killed deer out to 140 before. The main thing is keep everything within YOUR comfort zone. Good choice and good shooting

Me too. I went the other extreme and put a little Ruger LC9 on order for Valentine's Day. Will take a couple of months or so to get it. Just a bit bigger than the Ruger LCP 380 but shoots a full blown 9mm and will still fit in BJ pocket. Don't plan to use it for hunting but for "snake protection".

I got to chuckle on that "snake" protection.. Ya know I have been striving all along to build my Savage to be a 300 yd gun..and my slug gun's to be 150yd gun's... and here I am buying a hand cannon that will shoot as good as my slug gun's. I do have a definate problem though...This thing is 15 inches long overall.. My legs are only 28 inches long. The way I see it by the time this thing drags my pants down around my butt... It will be dragging on the ground...And I cant wear it on my chest like my buddy does..cause my arms are only 27 inches long...My buddies legs and arms are long enough.. He has a Super BlackHawk 10 inch .44 But all that weight and it makes him walk in circles...Got a limp just like Festus ;D Drop

You might consider putting a 2x scope on it. It will put the target on the same focal plane as the reticle, which is a big factor. When shooting iron sights, the most difficult part for most shooter is proper sight alignment. Take into consideration one is dealing with 3 different focal planes, a low powered scope just helps alot. Many new handgun shooters don't like a scope as it reveals just how much gun movement they have. Well I have news for them, it is moving just as much when they are shooting irons. The scope revealing the movement is actually a good thing, as it makes you more aware of the problem and you can do something about it. Regardless of what you do, you can improve your shooting 100 fold by taking the time to practice with an empty gun dry firing on a target every day. Practice proper trigger control and making the hammer drop without any other movement of the weapon. You are gonna need alot of practice to shoot well with that big boomer.

Yeah as the marlboro man said to harley... here they come harley...and their spending a fortune... Meaning this aint gonna be cheap. But it is what it is. I am considering a scope also. Some recomend a red dot..I dont know about those.. never had any luck with a couple on slug gun's. I know it will have to be recoil proof. I looked at a couple on the web.. Multi power? lke a 2x7/ what ya think about those? Also 4 power? Is it much harder to shoot than a 2 power? I doubt I can hit anything past 100yds with it.. Unless I "spend a fortune " to get good with it. Thanks and keep them coming Drop

the ultra dot holds up to them great, and with a life time warranty. 2 or 4x would be great at the ranges you want to shoot

I like a 2x Leupold handgun scope, simple and holds up well. Better then a red dot for hunting IMO.

Got to hold one Just like it Sat.... WOW!!! I could feel it pulling the muscle in my Rotater cuff... Kind of weak anyway. How am I gonna carry this thing around? I am going to pick it up by this approaching weekend ;D Then start shopping for a scope and shells holster.. Shooting sticks...bench-rest... What else am I going to need? I think I will begin my reloading career with this one. I have the basic's here. I sure am excited about this.. Already got me looking at .45 auto's... Drop

Drop you never did say what caliber your new revolver is. They make the Super Redhawk in 44 mag and 480 and I think even in 41 mag. Anyway what caliber did you get?

Having shot a bunch hand cannons over the years i.e. the last Ruger Alaskan I shot I asked the owner "what in the world are u doing with this"""""'
stated he was going on fishing trip and needed it for bear protection.
I told him I had soon take my chances with the bear.
Seriously after owning lots of hand magnum boomers I have come back to my old .41. Can make it do about anything I want to with the right ammo and load selection, and wrist don't need ice pak at nite.
What caliber did you go with?

Heres my 7 1/2" 454 Casull Super Redhawk. It wears a 2 1/2 Nikon and Hogue Tamer Grips. The Tamer grips really improved the felt recoil of this gun. Ive killed one deer with it so far. I practice out to 100 yards using 250 XTPs and 250 Speer Gold Dots.

I went with the 44 mag. Thought about the .41 I asked the dealer about ammo. His reply was. Sometimes its readily available... and sometime's it isnt. I have always been interested in the .41 but around here if I would decide to sell it , it isnt a mover . The 44 is ever popular and with the 9.5 barrel and the Hogue tamer grips i hope it is shootable.... To late now. But It will be neat to take it hog hunting.. And maybe next year I can use it whitetail hunting. If it dont work out then it will be a fine heirloom...lol. You guy's have me concerned about the recoil of this cannon ... My old hands are tired from squeezing paint guns for years.... a little arthritic at times...but it aint like I am going to shoot it every weekend. I do want me a big old hog with big tusks hanging on the wall though... Drop

The Redhawk is heavy and with the Tamer grips recoil shouldn't be that bad in .44 mag. One thing I did learn if shooting off a bench don't rest my elbows on the bench without a rubber pad under them. Learned that the hard way. Mike

Drop I understand the ammo on the .41 I almost got rid of mine for that reason then stumbled on to Double Tap Ammo, McNett makes a load with 180 XPB that is lethal on game and goes about 1600, sure makes it a solid 125 yd gun. I wouldn't worry about tired old hands the 44 with wake them up for you. ;D Seriously there is not enough difference in the 2 if gun weight is about the same to notice. Having shot both quite a bit they both have some bite with upper loads. And definitely some truth to the old saying that anything the 41 can do the 44 can do better, especially when heavy bullets are needed.

Well that gives you time to pick out rings, bases and a scope. Maybe another optic choice. Ammo- you might find the 44 mag cheaper stuff like the Winchester white box and Remington UMC are hard to find as they sell out quick, at least here in Indiana.

The new supr red hawk comes dovetailed and with ring's. I am thinking about either a 2x or a 4x.. I have a lot of Leupold's but not 100% for sure yet... But I think I might get a couple boxes of shells. Is any brass better to load with than another? drop

If your going to buy new brass, the Starline is pretty good. But I would not worry much about it, the only brass I found to be a little hinky in 44 was the PMC.
