Hey fellas, been off the board for a while. Work is a bear. Just turned sixty and had a knee surgery. Like the harley riders I got parts falling off every time I run done the road.
My son in law bought a T/C contender. Looks great .Ser.184XXX I has the slide bar safety, one piece bolt (not 2piece) My contender is Ser.436xxx, and I've had mine15 years, so I guess my son in laws is considerably older.
The problem is ,after you have dropped the hammer ,as to fire, with or without a round chambered, it requires mans two handed grip to break open the action. (girls forget it)
Now if you get it broke open once, and then reclose(with or without a round loaded), and don't cock the hammer, and want to unload the weapon( like at the end of the day) it opens pretty smoothly.
I did a modest amount of polishing in the striker, sear bolt area, which helped a little.
Anybody got any suggestions?

You have one of the older Contenders, they are a bear to open. I sent one back to the factory and they converted it to an easy open, I believe they charge $55 for that job. That is what they use to be. Lou

At one time I owned three Contenders and a LOT of different barrels. Once in a while I'd get a new barrel and would have that problem. Used to send them back (with the frame) to TC and they'd fix them FREE. They made the "interchangable" parts, not me. How can they justify charging for something they did wrong? Looks like they're not the company they used to be.

I'm sorry I didn't see this thread, sooner; a quick, easy and free fix is to grind a small amount away from the locking lug spring. Just don't grind so much that the barrel is loose in the frame when it's in locked position.
First, disassemble the pistol by removing the forearm and pushing the hinge pin out of the frame. You'll see the un-blued locking lug on the frame end of the barrel. Use a drift to push the roll pin far enough to release the locking lug. You can then dump out the spring for grinding.

Sorry I have not been on the board. It's been a busy year.
Heres an update. T/C is definitely not the company they used to be. Yes they want $55.00 to fix some thing that was a design problem that should have never left the factory. They recognize the problem and even had a special order number for the repair, which involves a new hammer among other parts.
Whadda gonna do? I needed the repair ,I got the Contender right .So I figured what the hay. I sent it to the new T/C and they received it on 8/2/11.
I heard nothing, so I called in October. Talked to someone . They did not have info the people in that department were not answering their phone, they would call me back the next day. They did not call.
Called in November. Same thing. Emailed. Nothing back.
Called December .Same thing.
January I emailed S&W: Sent: Wednesday, January 25, 2012 8:20 PM To: Smith & Wesson Support Subject: anybody home?
What has S&W done to T/C arms? I sent a contender in for an EZ Open kit 6 months ago. I can't get any response from T/C via email, phone. I'm taking a stab emailing S&W. Whom can I contact upstream from customer service to register my disappointment and displeasure.(email, phone)
T/C used to have customer service that was the best in the industry. This is so sad.
Finally some sort of reply:
Your Contender was received in August. Unfortunately due to
the transition we are not set up to perform charge work
at this time. We will be offering this service but it won’t be for
another couple of months. We apologize that you have not
been notified on the status of your rifle. Please let us know if
you would like the Contender returned or you would like to wait
for the service to be performed.
Thank you,
Kate
Customer Service
That's where it stands.
T/C aint what it used to be. Please share this. S&W needs to feel the heat for killing a great company.

I'm going to close this story with more sad news and some good news. First the good news. I did what Harley said and that fixed it. The sad news is T/C is even worse than I thought. Today I received the Contender via fed-ex. I had no notice from T/C. Fed-ex notified me something was coming that required a adult signature. I though it would be the contender. Must be fixed, right? Wrong!!!!!! This was a repair that had a part # , a $ 55.00 charge and a special name last year when I sent it. Now I wonder how good every bodies lifetime guarantee will be , in view of this debacle. Seven months and eighteen days ,and $25.00 to ship it ,to decide they can't do the work. I won't be selling my T/C stuff, but I sure won't be buying any more. They got a lot of fence mending to do if this is the state of business model. Tell your friends.

Last chapter, maybe.
T/C sent me a gun case (#7513). Nice gesture. I sent them this:
That said ,I do not want to appear ungrateful, however , truth be told I would rather have had the service performed. It seems a logical extension of reason, that since S&W has no interest in performing this work, and, there appears to no proprietary interest at stake, how about providing some detailed information on the necessary modifications. I have a number of skilled gun smiths in the area who would welcome the opportunity to engage the work.
So, lets see what they say. I'm guessing they are going to ignore me.

That letter is BS I sent one of my contenders back to have the easy open they sent me a new G-2 in it's place. They wouldn't give me an explanation but it was when thompson was the owner not S&W I guess the policy has change but prior to S&W I was under the impression that all thier pistols carried the lifetime guarantee?
