Well, I'm pretty excited today and praising God too.
Last night, I shot my first archery deer. It was a little button buck, about 90 pounds, but he will be good eating!
Yesterday, I got to my stand area about 7:15 in the morning. I saw a doe about 7:55, but she didn't walk past me...she bedded down about 65 yards from me. She was a young doe...her mom was probably being tended by a buck.
Then about 10:30 am this button buck walks down another trail. He was really on the move! I grunted at him to stop, but he kept walking. I shot, but missed. He didn't seem to concerned about it though.
I ate lunch around 12:30pm, and and about 45 minutes later the little doe got up and walked off. She didn't give me any opportunity...she had watched me shoot at the other deer, and was kind of nervous. Hopefully this doesn't educate her too much!
The afternoon passed slowly, and it was cold. I contemplated moving my stand for the evening hunt, but after texting my cousin, I decided to stay put. I was really struggling with the mental aspect of hunting at this point - I was cold, I had been in the tree since 7:15, the wind had picked up, and I didn't have any more food to munch on.
I texted my cousin again, and he told me to stay on stand until dark. That was the encouragement I needed for the last 90 minutes!
Then at 5:00pm, I saw the same button buck I missed earlier walking down the same trail he used earlier. I got my bow ready, and this time he stopped when I grunted at him. Arrow released....hit a little high....then he took off! I was worried at first because I knew I had hit him high. But after 40 yards, he hunched his back and collapsed! A classic double lung hit!
I was so excited! This is my 2nd year archery hunting, and I've missed a couple of times before, so when I made the shot and saw him drop, I was really happy. I knew that, even though he was small, he was a great trophy and I'm thankful for him.
I praise God for providing the harvest, and for a healthy body to be able to hunt. He is so good to us!
