Does Pac-nor or anyone else make a smokeless barrel for the Encore?
Also, has anyone tried the smokeless barrels from SMI? Their website is kinda vague and they show that their barrels have a 1 in 36 twist rate. isn't that kinda slow for a smokeless?
Thanks,
JohnP

A1, do you have any experience with SMI? Also, what twist would you recommend for a .45 smokeless?
Thanks, JohnP

I have an SMI douglas .50 barrel for my H&R slugnunter. They did a great job, I went with 1:22 twist.
Wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. I believe many of the guys shooting .45 pacnors are having great luck with 1:22 (thanks DB)

Most of the Pac Nors are 1:22 but many have also had good results with 1:20

SMI did the BP install (RBinAR was out of commission) when I converted my 45-70 Encore barrel. They did excellent work and did it quickly (I think it was March). It's a 24" 1/20 twist TC 45-70 blue barrel I purchased from Natchez (even got a $50 rebate from TC). Sent it to SMI and they installed a hex head BP for 209 shotgun primers. I'm wringing the barrel out now and it looks like it's gonna be good for my intent. I was pleased with the SMI work. $ wise the cost of the barrel, BP, shipping, and the SMI work it was about a wash on getting a SMI barrel for my Encore straight out. 10

10ga, did you have to send the receiver in with the barrel? Also, are you shooting sabotless?

Johnp, Did not have to send Encore frame to SMI. Shooting saboted now but saboted in future plans. Don't have enough time to develope sabotless as ML deer season opens 10/30 here in VA. Have tried some of Barrycudas sized and knurled bullets through the barrel and looks like it has potential. Getting excellent accuracy with light blue smooth sabots and 200 gr. XTP. Going to try some 195 Barnes this PM. Storms with the big front have kept me off the range for 2 days. The Encore conversion is a very light outfit. I wanted it for my "calling" gun. Before in and after rut I like to call deer, ie... call with rattle, breeding bellow, and buck cough etc... I do it sorta like when I'm predator calling, locate bedding/holding areas, check wind, sneak to a hide/stand, wait a bit, then go through some calling sequences. Usually stay on stand 25-45 minutes depending on conditions and location. Then on to another stand. This is obviously a lot of moving and traveling and the MLII is just too bulky for this. Until now I've used my .58 sidehammer gun. It's a good shooter but at 60+ years I can't see/use the open sights any more. I think this Encore is going to do just fine. Got a nice 3-9 on it and it's shooting good. 10

10ga, one more question, (yea, sure!) could a man buy a 45-70 Encore barrel and have a competent machinist install a Savage smokeless breech plug? What, if any, would the ramifications be?
Thanks, JohnP

Thats zactly what I did with SMI doing the BP install. They know what they're doing. A machinist aint a gunsmith! At one time RBinAR was doing this type work and was probably the BEST available. Don't know if he's doin that now or not. 10

Maybe I should have been more specific, he's kinda both. He builds custom 1911 pistols, has his own line of AR15 lowers, getting ready to do complete builds on AR's, runs a successful machine shop and plays a lot with mlers. He knows the concept and has all the right equipment, only problem is it would be a side line for him and would probably take a while. Anyway, I'm gonna talk to him about it tomorrow and see if I can get him fired up about it.

sounds like he's more than qualified Going to drop you a pm about his AR's later tonite. Besides these smokeless ML's, EBR's are my other obsession.

John. I also had SMI do an Encore 45/70 conversion. The 45/70 has a chamber so the SMI breech plug is the way to go.It is longer than the savage plug so it will fill the chamber. It took a while but i am very happy with mine.Shooting less than an inch at 100yards.Heavily knurled 200gr sst harvester smooth blue sabot and 57gr H4198.
