This past week, including both weekends, was the early ML season here in Arkansas. Last weekend, I shot a good sized doe with my P-N 45. Unfortunately, I forgot to take a camera with me, and also forgot that my new cell phone has a pretty good camera in it, so no pictures. It is certain that the 195 gr Barnes/Knight Red Hot is devastating to a deer! My load does almost 2800 fps at the muzzle, and didn't slow much in the 60-70 yards to the deer. Did lots of damage and kept on going, but the deer didn't!
This past weekend, my youngest Son, Aaron (AKA Littlepig on this board), shot a spike buck with the jhm 50 that I recently re-stocked and pillard with a Boyd's Ross Featherweight Thumbhole stock. He thought the deer was a doe that was being chased by a large bodied buck. He said the larger deer was built like a tank, but had goofy horns. One side was either broken off, or mal-formed into a disk shape, and the other side was growing down alongside of the deer's head. Since we have a 3 Point Rule here, the buck was not legal to shoot, no matter how old and large he may have been. The "Doe" stepped into an open spot, about 60 yards away, and Aaron took the shot. The load was a 300 gr Barnes Original, Harvester Black Cr Rib, and a duplex of 10/55 N-110/ Re-7. This load does about 2300 fps at the muzzle, and hit the deer just behind the shoulder. It managed to make a run of about 30 yards before going down. Aaron was shocked to find that the deer was actually a spike that had hardened bone barely sticking out of the hair. It was not a typical spike or nubbin deer, but was full grown. We looked at the teeth and estimate that he was 1.5 years old.
The Barnes Original bullet performed perfectly, and we can recommend it to anyone. There are pix posted below, but I'm not certain where to post the bullet hole shots. If they should be moved, say so, and I will do a post in the correct area.
