Most of you know that much of my 20 years in the Army was spent in marksmanship units, competing, teaching, repairing rifles and pistols and learning. I was fortunate to learn from shooters who were record setters and ranked at the top of the shooting sport. Occasionally I attempt to provide members here with a technique or tips that will help them shoot better easier.
My tip today will make cheeking the weapon easier, aligning your eye with the scope better and should quickly improve your shooting.
The recoil pad has a tip and a butt. The tip is the thinner part that will be lowest when the rifle is sitting in the shooting position. Place the tip of the recoil pad in the hollow of the shoulder. It should fit between the collar bone and the point of the shoulder. Just below the bone that goes from the shoulder to the neck. Placed right much of the butt plate will be exposed above the shoulder. Looking from behind you should see about half the butt plate showing above the shoulder.
This permits the eye to be naturally behind the scope or sights. It will decrease the need to scoot the cheek forward or back to obtain alignment. It will also permit a firm cheek weld and practically eliminate all danger of getting a scope cut.
Let me say that if your neck is exceptionally long or short some adjustments may be needed. Walking behind the line of the great shooters I discovered that much of the butt plate was showing above the top line of their shoulder. This tip has helped many shooters. Hope it helps some of those who reads this. Ben
