I've been using Knight Breech Plug Grease any one use this? It has always worked in my non smokeless guns. But it seems to pick up carbon and make a gooy mess. but I've never had trouble with removal. does anti seeze pick up carbon and make the same type of mess? Maybe I'm just using to much.
Also what about cleaning the threaded area inside the reciever between the end of the barrel and the bolt race, the place with the vent hole on either side. any cleaning tips for this area.

Use Teflon tape on your plug instead of grease and if you use grease then use brake parts cleaner in the can to clean out the breech threads or you can use a breech brush made by T/C. Mike

...another plug/vent maintenance tip is to use a 17 HMR brush to clean the vent liner threads in plug...lots of opinions as to how to lube etc the plug & vent, but the first step is to get the threads clean...

So you use the pink teflon tape on the plug threads and nothing else? Then after a shooting session, the tape comes out with the plug and there is basically nothing to clean from the threads in the barrel? Do you use the tape and nothing else on the vent liner threads as well?

:)billy the tape will get caught up in the barrel threads so you will need to go in there with a brush and get the excess tape out.

i use white lithium grease, after joe d advised on the savage packet grease which is w/lithium,no problems & no mess after the 1st shot, even leaving in bore plug the entire season as not to mess up plug/primer back pressure's

I have gone to plain white teflon tape on both plug and vent only, and as long as you push the tape into the threads with your fingernail, it stays on the plug threads 99% when removing. Jay

The past six months or so, I have been using Rem. Oil w/teflon exclusively on my BP and have not had any issues with it getting stuck..................Then to, I remove it after each weekly session I am still using the silver anti-seize on the vent liner. I have not gone to using the .17 cal. bore brush, but do "hit" it with the air hose after running a 1/8" drill bit thru the entire plug. I then slightly run a bit (just a tad smaller than a "C" size drill) into the primer end to insure my primer will filly seat. Richard
