There was an article on television this morning concerning the human brain. There evidently are portions of the brain that handle specific tasks such a decision making, control sleep or handle our emotions.
Doctors were very happy that they had performed surgery on a certain man to remove a tumor from a part of his brain that was very near the portion of the brain that handled rational thinking and decision making. However, their happiness was short lived because the poor fellow had suffered some damage to the portion of the brain that performed emotional functions and the man would spend all day long trying to come to the most simple of decisions such as what pen to use to write a letter.
This news type of show was very interesting in that in pointed out that emotions dictate most of man's decisions. In fact the show pointed out that we should be careful about making decisions when we are very sad or very happy because people tend to take unneccesary risks when emotions run high. Also emotions that we felt as a small child can have a great bearing on how we view all of reality thus greatly influencing our decisions as adults.
Merchants spend billions of dollars each year in an attempt to tap into our emotions to influence us to buy their product. It must work to some degree or they wouldn't invest in such huge amounts of money. You know........you only go around once in life so grab for all the ghusto you can get. (as a busty blonde hands a smiling fellow a beer)
Why is it that people above all the animal world depend so much on their emotions?? Are we crazy? At least the animals have an instinct to guide them. Men only have their feelings......and well, also their intellect. Recent studies show that man's intellect is tightly connected to his feelings. Any break between these two parts of the brain and man will not function. He will die.
You see, a person can hear a song and that song will influence him to make a decision. This is one reason that we have music in church. Try watching your favorite movie without the music. I assure you it won't be your favorite movie anymore. Men can appreciate art and I know that some of us hunters have been just paralized by the beauty of an orange sunset. We are all about our emotions and our strongest emotion is love. Who can explain the love that a parent has for a child? It just comes out of nowhere and smacks you in the face! It doesn't make any logical sense at all to raise a child through college years only to have that child leave the parents to cleave to his own destiny. But yet, because of love we freely and gladly do it.
In this way man is like God. Our emotions are a special gift from God because they are like nothing else in the universe. The apostle Paul said that you will recognize the followers of Christ by their love. Do you think that is true? Paul also said that love covers a multitude of sins and Jesus gave his deciples one last commandment before he left them. That command was to love one another.
We don't come to a decision to surrender the will of our whole lives over to some spiritual being that we cannot see out of some logical process. Think about it. How can any man love Jesus? He lived two thousand years ago! I never saw him or talked with him or have ever audibly heard his voice......yet I love him. How insane is that??? But yet it is the power of His love that transforms lives and the world survives by His grace to this day.
I am in agreement with Wilmsmeyer on one crucial point. There will come a time when all questions will be answered and all will know the truth. That day is not now. For now the justified will live by faith. Not blind faith mind you. But a faith that is verified every day by the grace of God as we pray for each other out of love and true concern.
