How many of you reload for this cartridge or shoot it? How does it do a distance?. Does wind push it around much? Friend of mine is looking to buy one. Thanks, Mike

I had a friend that has one nad he reloaded for it. he got his to around 4000 fps. I cant remember the load though. it was accurate and the wind did push it some at greater distances.

If your a fur hunter it is tough to beat, very small hole in and usually no exit. Another thing is that it doesn't sound like a normal rifle, just a sharp crack. One guy I knew used it on fox and yotes, being a night hunter he rarely used it past 100yds. As far as reloading your kinda limited on bullet selection. You also have to clarify 17 Remington or the newer 17 Remington Fireball which has a smaller case and a bit milder on the fps.

I have one and have had it for a couple of yrs. Its a CZ527 "varmint". It will put 5 shots into an .75"@100yds. Some loads smaller. For more info on small calibers you can check out saubier.com. It is loaded with sub caliber info. Also, the Woodchuck Den offers quite a few bullets as does Berger. The bullets have a surprisingly high BC for the size of the bullets. It is sensitive to small variations in powder charges. It is also fast. You do need small caliber cleaning supplies for it.

I have had one for years and if coon hunting the wind is usually no big problem. but the wind will blow the bullet around at longer distances. I love mine and would not trade it in for anything

I've owned one for over 20 years. I love it. The only negative thing I can say about it is that it is a lot louder than I would have anticipated. It produces a piercing high pitch crack that really hurts if you don't use plugs. I load H4895 with a 20 gr V-Max at 4460 fps. It groups those at 5/8". Using WW760 it gives me 4240 fps but groups 1/4" at 100 yds. Don't let the choice of bullets discourage you for getting one. It shoots them all very well. I'm now testing a Berger 30 gr at 3800 fps. www.woodchuckden.com has a lot of custom boatails available for the .17 Rem. What's so cool about shooting one is that you never lose your sight picture. As soon as the trigger breaks you can see the stuffing flying out of the chuck at 300 yards. I strongly suggest that you send your new rifle out to get cryo'd . At over 4200 fps I could get second degree burns if touching the barrel after 2 shots. After cryo-treating the barrel, I can hold my hand on the barrel after 8 shots. So it definitely helps. Such a smooth shooting rifle will really help you shoot at long range a lot better. But it spoils you if you later have to shoot some .30 cal magnum that will send your lips out to the rear sight. Try one, it will become your new favorite hunting rifle. Good Luck!

I have the CZ527 varmint and reload for it. It is great fun to shoot as others have said!!
My best loads are all with Moly coated bullets: 25g Berger MEF, and 25g of IMR4320 (New brass), Once fired... neck sized-25.5g powder. This gives me about 4100fps MAX Load. Same load for 20g bullets is 4200+ fps
CZ requires it's own brand of scope mounts=specialized. But is a REAL tack driver. I get .4 groups or less, all the time!
While Pdog shooting, with a 25mph wind, at 300 yards, I had to compensate about 10-12 inches...And still wacked dogs left and right
I must say that reloading the .17 takes some getting used to. you will need a very good trimmer=Sinclair!!
I also load for the 204, and can say that it is a breeze compared to the .17rem And brass is cheaper, and it shoots as good as the .17 with the 35g Berger bullets, and 1:12 twist. Uses about 29.5g of IMR4320, = 4000fps
If I had to do it all over again, I might have just got a 204 instead, saves money, and almost as good on fur. And you have over a hundred rifles to choose from!!

I was bit by the .17 remington bug years ago and owned 2 or maybe 3 it is hard to remember. All of them I had shot like lazers out to about 300 yards and the best one (Remington custom shop) would shoot little tiny clover leafs at 100 yards. The wind will push those tiny bullets around though. I thought my rifle was off one day missing twice at 250 yards. Went to the range and put it on paper protected from the wind and it was right on. Went back and killled that ground hog by holding on the windward edge. l loved the lack of recoil and the flat trajectory. Also a regular weight barrel is a varmit weight with a 17 cal hole in it. Makes a great walking around rifle.

Check out Coyotegods.com. Been going there for a few yesrs and they are about the most knowledgable guys on 17s I have found. 10 ga www.coyotegods.com/register on their board and do a search on whatever info you need or post a question. However I got badly burnt by a humorous flame there. Had to do with "beaver calls".

I have had my .17 Rem since 1998. I have fragged many a California ground squirrel out to 400 yards with it. I have also taken quite a few Virginia ground hogs out to 300 yards. It is a very sweet varmint rifle as I can see the impact in the scope. My favorite load is a 30 grain Berger HP covered in moly being pushed by 4320.
