well i did go out today for PAs flintlock season. it rained and some snow till about 10:00 AM. there still was some snow on the ground. At about 11:00 am the sun started to come out. but still had not seen a deer. At 11:45 I heard some noise above me , and into the sun none the less. I was sitting and there is some thick brush and tree tops behind me too, so all i could see was some heads and ears. I slowly turned and stood up and could see the last two in an opening and following the others into the brush. so i pulled up and the only shot i got was almost facing me up hill @ APX 40 yards. I pulled the trigger and guess what.... a hang fire!!! I saw one of the 2 run back the way it came with its tail down. So i calm down and slowly reload my flinter. i head up to where the deer were and i look around... no blood! but i do see where the ground is tore up from the deer turning around and ran off up hill. So i follow the tracks threw some pretty thick brush. NO BLOOD ANY WHERE!!! nothing on the brush nothing on the ground. I follow till they get mixed up with other tracks and i cant determine which is which and they really scatter. So back i go to where the deer turned. I started to think maybe that deer wasn't the one i thought I hit. maybe the one that followed the others is the one. so i look and i see where my shot hit the ground!!!! YAAAA! so i get above the mark on the ground and look back to where i was standing and compared to where the tracks where. It look like i pulled the shot during the hang fire. there is what look to be about an inch to the right of where the tracks are. BUT I need to make sure so i follow the other tracks for about 75 yards and they go down hill to an open area and scatter.... @$#&^%@ .... well i look at the snow and i don't see any blood. I feel 99.9% i missed cleanly since i aligned every thing up and the shot seems to be to the right. there were 6 deer in the bunch and nothing with horns. well i didn't see any thing the rest of the day. so at the end of the day when i unloaded i hit right where i expected. I HATE hang fires! I even changed the primer powder several times and even put fresh powder in the touch hole. I guess it was just one of those things. that is what makes flintlocks so challenging.
I hope others faired better than I did.
