Arthur,
Naval Surface Warfare Center-Formerly just called Crane. They store munitions and develope munitions for the Navy.
It is located in Southern Indiana between Bloomfield and Logootee just off on Indiana 231. Approx. 43,000 acres on the base. Is a Military draw hunt for Indiana.

You can not miss the place, they use 16" shells for road markers. While the Navy runs the place and does a ton of stuff there the ammunition side is now actually ran by the Army. They fill mines, torpedos and some big gun stuff with their explosive components. The Navy's office that handles all the neat gun toys for the SEALs and Marines is also there.

Rossman: Supposedly some of the barrel tooling for the 16 inch guns of the Missouri class was once held in your general area by a Harlin Todd, he had a heat treating plant in the Dayton area and did some work for the Monarch Lathe Co. They are big projectiles, I wonder what the BC is ?

You want real fun. There are many military installations here in VA. I've seen about every kind of military aircraft do strafing and bombing runs on the target ships just off Tangire Island in Chesapeake Bay, neat stuff. Then fishing in Machodoc Creek when they were shooting the naval guns down the Potomac River at Dhalgren, real loud and big splashes in the river. Then when I was working in Spotsylvania Co. you could hear all kinds of stuff and see some of the aircraft "working" at Quantico, all kinds of full auto stuff. M16s, Stoners, M60s, 50 BMGs, mortars and plenty of different unidentified explosions, especially following the aircraft diving runs, etc.... Then one night I was going down rte. 40 through Camp Pickett when they opened up with a volly at the tank range next to the highway. I almost flipped over in the ditch. WOW! 10 ga
