This season has been rough going for me. My wife, daughter, and I have all been fighting bad colds and/or the flu for the past 3 weeks so my hunting time has been limited. There are still a million acres of standing corn in Northeast IN so a couple of my usual honey holes have not been huntable. Opening day 11/14 I saw the biggest buck I've ever seen in the wild but he would not come out of the brush. I still dream about that big boy...a 150"-160" 10 point. I only hunted 3 times between opening day and Thanksgiving and saw a total of 4 deer.
Well Thanksgiving morning my luck finally changed. I was hunting in the same blind as opening day and finally around 8:30 a doe and two yearlings came out of the woods about 150 yds away and started trotting across the field. I could not get the doe to stop but one of her youngsters stopped to back to see where the noise was coming from. A 195g Barnes pushed by 62g of H4198 ripped through high on both shoulders at about 145 yds and dropped her in a heap. At the shot the woods erupted and 3 more deer came bounding out along with the first doe and yearling. The 5 deer mulled around looking at their fallen partner. I thought "Hey if your all just gonna stand there, I'm gonna pull a tar12 and just start blazing away". I got reloaded and picked out the biggest doe and gave her one just behind the shoulder from about 160 yds. She took off on a 40 yd death run and did a face plant about 60 yds from where the first deer dropped. Well the field cleared before I could get a third load down the tube so it was time to go get the truck.
The 195 Barnes performed just as expected based on the shot placements. The first big yearling that dropped in her tracks the bullet hit a rib going in, clipped the bottom of the spine, and hit another rib going out. Exit wound was about 1.5" in diameter. On the second deer, the big doe, the bullet drilled between two ribs going in and hit a rib going out. Exit wound maybe .75". Lungs were mushed.
The corn was just picked off one of my honey holes yesterday. I'm gonna be sitting out there in about 2 hours!!!
