I was blessed this morning with a nice opening day Meigs County Tennessee deer. The morning was interesting and I had seen 5 does, 9 turkeys, a mink and a bird perched on the end of my muzzleloader but got much more interesting when a doe walked into the far end of the field. A moment later this guy walked into the field following her. He stopped for a moment as I got my rifle up and then when I put the scope on him took another couple of steps and stopped again broadside. I saw the height of the rack and didn't have to think long. It was a Savage muzzleloader and the shot was 200-210 yards. He ran about 80 yards down the field through some native grasses and I never saw him come out of the other side of the field. While watching I saw the grass shaking in the middle of the field and hoped he was down. I walked down and found blood in a cut where a bushhog had been through the field and he was only 5 yards off the cut lying dead. Bullet was a Hornady 250SST over 43gr. 4759 and a trimmed HPH12 sabot and gave a complete pass through both lungs but a little farther back than I had anticipated.......windage or deer took a step I don't know. It's my personal best. I'm a happy camper at this point.

Job well done. I enjoyed the details which were written excellent. Congratulations, Few if any would pass on that one. I am not a trophy hunter but I would sure mash the trigger on one like that in a heartbeat.

He was only a 3 1/2 year old. Think what he would have been in a couple of years if I'd let him grow. I had no intention of that when I saw him though. He might look bigger if not for the 6'3" 340lb hunter holding him. Gotta go on a diet so my deer will photograph better. I just talked to the guy who owns the property a moment ago and he said he can show me a big rub not 75 yards from where I shot the deer that he had probably made. He said he had seen the large rub but hadn't seen the deer. My feet are starting to come back to earth.

Isn't the world record a 3 1/2 year old deer also. Congratulations - wonderful deer. Sorry you couldn't recover the 250SST to see if it "failed".

It would be neat to go cut that rub and keep it with the head. Especially if you are having it mounted. It has been said many times: Big rubs, Big deer. I don't think I have ever seen a rub displayed with a head. Might be interesting.

I don't think I have ever seen a rub displayed with a head. Might be interesting. A friend of mine took a rub from a buck he shot and turned it into a walking stick. He uses it all the time. There are a couple of points that don't show in the picture. There's one off the back of the left G2 and another at the front of the left main beam a couple of inches long making him a basic 4x5 rack with stickers.

I went back today and walked down to the area the buck was standing and ranged back to my stand. It was slightly farther than I said and ranged exactly 216 yards to the point where the ground was disturbed as he ran at the shot. I also went down about 50 yards further downtrail from where he was shot and found the rub which I would assume he made. He tore this little 4-5 inch pine tree pretty good. Here's a pic of the rub.

Congrats on a great shot on an unusual buck. It looks like he was a real tree killer. I've been enjoying your posts since you joined. You will have to tell us some time how you got hooked on the 35 Whelen. DH

Personal best while wearing old fashion camo (checked flannel shirt) nice buck and nicely done. I hope you up your personal best in less time than I have in it. My best was a HUGE Iowa 5 x 7 back in 78. There has been alot of deer since then, none comes even close.

Whelenman,
How to take better deer pictures in two simple steps:
1. Make a "Walking Stick" out of that buck rub. 2. Use it every day until next deer season.
Seriously; Nice buck and great shot!
