I thought I read somewhere that savage is coming out with a smooth barrel nut. Any one know how it is different from the current one and how you take it on and off the barrel? Also should we be thinking about maybe ordering a couple of spares of the current style or what?

Sounds like Savage has been reading too many Pac-Nor threads.

They actually started using those last year on the 14/114 Classics. They made three big changes to make the rifle look better.
The smooth barrel nut. Suppposedly you use a spanner wrench and since you can not tighten it as tight they also added a set screw.
The cocking indicator "flag" on the side of the receiver ring is gone so the rear receiver ring is now round instead of having a flat milled on the right side. A tail is added to the firing pin and sticks out of a hole in the bolt assembly screw when cocked.
The bolt release is also moved to inside the trigger guard. You have to release the sear (pull the trigger) and then work the release to remove the bolt.
How much of these changes will be added to other models I do not know but it does add cost. Of course when your spending the extra bucks for a Classic it is small price to pay for some cosmetics.
You guys just don't stay up on the centerfire side of the force.
