Has anyone ever necked up a .308 to .338?

Not sure what info you want so my generic answer is. No knowledge with a 308, but a friend did it to a 30-06. Great round for elk. I have a 358 Win so I'd expect good things from a 338-08 due to the good selection of bullets for reloading.

My Speer reloading manual has a section on a .338-06. Looks cool. Been eyeballing the .358 and that very cool as well. Looking for a project gun that would be cool to work with. Not looking for super long range. 300 yd max. The .358 has some good bullets and fair ballistics and I would consider it. Like the short action rounds. The .308 has been necked up and down in so many calibers I was just wondering about the .338. Got .243, .260, 7mm, .358 and probably other wildcat attempts. .338 sounds like a natural step in filling some gaps.
Would like a 22 - 24" medium contour carry rifle that would be good leaning off a tree, a shooting stick or nestled in a ground blind with a rock solid rest. The barnes 185 gr would be a nice bullet to get in the 2700 ish fps range. Would love it in a 700 Rem. I might just settle for .358 due to availability. Hmmmm.

There is a lot going for a 308 size action. You may also want to look at a 25 Souper (AKA 25-08) for a project. I've become hooked on the 25s lately. That said I can understand an appeal for the 338 or 358, with factory ammo and brass for the 358 still available. I load a 225 Sierra over IMR4320 for 24-2500 fps in a 1:14 pac-nor on a CZ-550 action. I have killed deer with the 358, but generally use it on black bear.
Edit. Well I guess there is factory ammo for 338-08. It's called 338 Federal lol learn something new every day.

44 re7 under a barnes 160= close to 2900 and pass threw on caribou for what's that worth. Yes I've necked up 308 brass to 338 fed, easy to do. Savage is the only one that I no of that is cambering the 338 fed.

I anneal them before and afterwards and haven't had any problems with split necks due to thinning. I generally throw away after the third reloading as I have a fair amount of 308 brass. If I were necking up to 338 I would start with a goal of 5 reloadings.

thx It was not what I thought it would be. I was expecting more ride to a location, walk a mile or so in and set up. Nope it is hard walking 4-8 miles twice a day. It was all good just not what I had in my head. Post rut then windy to boot. 1st part of the hunt saw 2 cows, the guide saw a small 4, and I think I saw it last day of the hunt saw a group of small bulls, guide said the one on the left was the better bull. So when he said shoot, I did. The getting into canada was a real pain but I did get there

Hopefully you don't run into one on the highway. Moose terrain is not easy to traverse and need to be in decent shape.

However, it is always fun and rewarding after the fact -- some just take a little longer to reach that stage. I've not been able to get out of the states since the covid was identified, I'm happy for you that you made it. Again, congrats on the moose it's a bucket list dream of mine too.
