Knowing your SML and any inherent weakness is a great asset when it comes to trouble shooting. All of us at one time have gone through trouble shooting a condition and from this we learn what the problem was and correction needed. My experience is limited to the 10ML-II so my example here is with the Savage. One range session many moons ago I began to experience my groups start to open and point of impact was changing. Then there was a misfire. Now that was a surprise and aggravating as hunting season was just around the corner. Okay after 10-minutes I opened the bolt and looked at the primer noticing a softer hit than normal. So, I repacked my load and put in another primer. Then gave the bolt a stronger closure and that’s when I discovered the final travel of the bolt required more force. From that point on my groups returned to normal.
When hunting season arrived, I made sure my bolt was fully down. Now what I also discovered that while hiking through tight wooded terrain my bolt would slightly shift upwards. So now I needed to check my bolt position before even taking a shot.
After hunting season. I began a closer examination of what was going on. Working my bolt without a primer, bolt closure was just fine. Put a primer in and the condition for bolt closure difficulty reappeared. Now time to pull the BP and check it out. When I took a closer look at the primer pocket the problem became obvious, carbon buildup. I was so focused on flame channel cleaning and vent condition that I ignored the primer pocket. Okay this one is my fault and has never happened again because I learned from it.
Yes, there have been a few other incidents that when explored the blame fell on me and not my equipment. From these experiences I now can associate where to start looking when my SML is not behaving as it should.
Worst case scenario is present our problems on the Board to allow others try to help from their experience. I’ll be the first to admit I don’t have all the answers to SML problems but I would like to think there are few problems with the 10ML-II that I’m not aware of.
The big help when posting a problem is providing detailed info. Trying to diagnose a problem without more detailed info becomes a stab in the dark at times. But if it takes stabs in the dark there are a lot of members that will take a stab at it.
