Is there any advantage in brightness clarity with a 50 or larger diameter objective lens over something smaller. I am not rich and favor lower priced scopes. I prefer Leupold but am flexible.

Most consider 5mm /power as the maximum brightness that the eye will see thru a scope. So, a 40mm at 8x will be as bright as a 50 or 56 at 8x. However at 10x , the exit pupil will be down to 4 with the 40 (40/10=4) but still at 5 with a 50mm (50/10=5). Many higher power scopes have 50-56 mm but start to get dimmer, for most people, when the exit pupil starts going below 5. Example, I have a Zeiss Duralyt 42 mm 2x8 on my SWAT . It is as bright, in virtual darkness at 8 as it is at any lesser number. Hope this helps.
