Hi guys. It's been a while since I posted. While I've been playing with the Savage ML since around 2002, I basically just use it for hunting. I've had great success with the original ML-1 (modules) & still have it, switched and bought a ML-II from Dwight that RB in AR did some work on, and ended up swapping the barrel from 50 to .45. For a number of years I shot the Barnes with the blue sabots in the.45 barrel pushed with a load of H-4198 that some here had problems with the sabot blowing, but with the high loading force I wanted something easier to load.
A buddy has a swinglock sizing die set to make bore rider .45 cal bullets, and I got some .45 cal 325g Pittman Aeromax bullets. While they fly really well, and they kill deer phenomenally well, at closer ranges if hitting bone the meat loss is too great @ the 2700+ fps they were moving at. Think of a soccer ball sized hole missing from the exit side of a deer.
I have a BUNCH of the T/C Shockwave 250 grain .45 cal blems. I was thinking of trying them in the .45, but only at 2300 fps or so MV to stop them from acting like a varmint bullet (I remember back when guys were pushing them super fast and them blowing up). All of my shooting at the current property that I hunt is under 220 yds.
Is this a feasible idea? They will be sized to be a bore rider, and will 2300 fps or so be enough of a kick in the butt to get them to obdurate?
If so, do ya'll have any suggestions on where to start with a powder charge and powder type/name? I'm comfortable with duplex, so that's not a problem. I have a lot of different powders here, so about anything is fair game.
Thanks for any help or suggestions you can offer.
