I bought my first 10ml in '03 and have been a "full time student" of this forum since the original green board. This is my first post I have never had a question that wasn't answered just by reading on an almost daily basis... until now. I would like your opinion on barrel length (bean field gun) crown style, false muzzle, and breach plug set-up (recessed bushing vs vent liner). This barrel will replace 1 of 2 10mls' (1 ss,1 blued another decision?) both with Okubo tactical stocks, Timney triggers, etc. I've spend alot of time on my bench from 10-80 degrees and out to 300yards and my hunting is done from stands in open farm country with "self imposed" standing deer only. I would like to join the sabot less 40 inner circle. PM if you prefer. Thanks in advance, Jeff

:)Welcome. The 40 is the best choice, IMO. I'd go with a 26-27" barrel. A muzzle brake. ( I like the SSS MB - plan on adding one to my 40). Hg recoil reducer in the stock. Simms pad. I prefer ventliners. Recessed plug. Don't have a knowledgable opinion on crowns. Others' will have different thoughts, and they should also be considered equally.

8-)I suggest you decide if a true bean field rifle is what you want. If the answer is yes I suggest a fairly long barrel say 25 or 26". However you will have a long heavy gun if it's built on a 10ML action.
If you are truly in to accuracy having the receiver trued and flat lug installed while the barrel is off is cheap insurance for better performance.
I cut the muzzle at a straight 90 degrees angle because it is a muzzle loader and a flat face helps get the powder in without a mess. I have never bothered with a false muzzle and think it might be a problem shooting sabot-less because you can't see the angle of the bullet as it is loaded.
I use my own plug because I think it's stronger, shorter, and more consistent than the original. However that does not mean the regular plug won't work.

My 3 45s and 1 40 have his BPs. He has made 2-3 of the 4 40s that are shooting. Mine will shoot one hole groups @ 100 yds(11/46g load), one large ragged hole , so I'd consider what he says.

Steve and RB,
Thanks for your input. I have more questions, but just got back from ice fishing and the sand man is beating me to death. I will get back to you soon.

My 40 has a standard 25" sst barrel and I love it. Like RB said, in an ML10 that makes for a pretty long and heavy rifle, but mine is used just for the range or the deer stand so that is OK with me. Makes it easy on recoil and the accuracy is great. Much better than my meager skills can adequately test.

Thanks Chuck for your input.
I have settled on 26" barrel length. Still undecided about breach plug design. I'm hoping to pick the brains of those with experience.
Three of the guns I spend time behind in the summer all weigh between 14# and 17#. I prefer them heavy.
