Dawn found us set up in a flooded cornfield off of the Wabash river here in Indiana...first light brings in a pair of mallards in which we promptly dumped...my sons black lab Joplin gleefully retrieves both birds and to my utter amazement they are both black mallard hens! I had never seen one in all of these years! And the star of the hunt...Joplin

You could be right...I didnt pay much attention to the second bird...I checked with my son and he says they were both hens...what ever the case might be it was pretty neat!

I was just wondering most people miss on the sex most wont put a finger in the vent. Yes I have but there not black mallards they are black ducks. They are normally bigger then a mallard but unfortunately for me they are don’t care who they mate with. If the wing spectrum had a white tip it’s a hybrid. Still a beautiful bird

You would have had a good laught at my expense when I didnt chamber a round and blew it big time on the second group of birds....

They look like black ducks to me. tedb has it right. Mallards have white borders in the wing speculum. And they do interbreed to some extent. They are all fun to hunt.

Tar you would not be the first don’t let me start talking about shooters on snow geese during regular season how many times I had single drop in call the shot and just hear click.
Joe that’s a great book the problem comes in when you have a old hen or a young drake.
Blacks love coastal marshes that I spend a lot time hunting
