And getting the kids through school it was finally time to give the house some much needed TLC! My wifes brother who is a carpenter by trade and a d**n good one i might add...is helping me to replace windows, doors and siding...we soon discovered that who ever orginally did the work needs to be shot! Piss poor workmanship throughout! Little to no flashing around the windows...where ever they could cut a corneer they did...and as a result there was water damage so we are reapairing everything as we go and doing it right...we have stripped this place to the studs and after window opening repairs we installed Owen Corning Foamular rigid insulation board and taped all joints with Owen Corning joint tape and then Typar house wrap and then the double pane low-e argon insulated windows and then flashed them with Owen corning flashing tape..siding prep late next week and we should have it wrapped up the following week! I cant wait!

If you do all that you will need even less wood to heat the place. What are you going to do in all your spare time then?

I was thinking exactly what jims said. It's a good feeling getting something done and done right!

One grandson due any day now and one due in Janauary...I am sure there will be something to do and besides that I got back into beagles and have several young dogs out in the kennels that i have been running everyday...there is always something to do! lol I am and will be cutting wood for myself for some time to come....I love doing it! Having said that i am no spring chicken and will be installing a propane appliance of some sort either this year or spring....but will burn wood until i cant run a chainsaw anymore.

Congratulations.
Nat Gas dropping 2/3 in price due to fracking stopped a lot of people from converting to wood. Your kids will probably see that reversed in their lifetimes.
Although, it is funny that in the 1930's my father told me that he was told oil would start to runout in the 1960's, little did they know that Saudi Arabia would eclipse Texas/Oklahoma, only to be eclipsed by fracking!
$3 oil may be gone for us, but @ $50 there is a whole new world, and when that's gone $100 oil will open a lot of other doors. Amazing that the world has been consuming 1,000 barrels per second for the last 20 years, and we keep finding more. I just hope that American politicians make sure that America has the last usable barrels!

Talk about cutting corners, I saw a place where they used yard sticks for door stop. Some businesses used to give them away. At least they were painted. Should have left them alone so you could keep track of your height. Looking good on your end though. Good for you.

There will never be NG available here where i am at...wood and propane is the only game available and propane prices can vary greatly....the wood does not. I will install 2 propane applianaces before it is said and done...and use them during the shoulder season before it gets real cold and early spring and that will reduce my wood consumption by a fair amount...it will strike a good balance.
