I'm having alot of carbon buildup in my breech plug and barrel of my new 50 cal CVA Optima V2. I started out with Fed. 209 shotgun primers and the flash hole would almost disappear after only 5 or 6 shots. I switced to Rem ML 209 primers with the same outcome. I'm also having buildup in my bore in two places. One is at the muzzle and the other ahead of where bullet is seated. There is also gas leakage by the face of the breech plug around the primer. The gas escapes down into the barrel latch and trigger guard. I used Black MZ and American Pioneer powders with moderate loads (-100gr). I was also using Harvester black Crush Ribbed sabots and Hornady 250 gr XTP bullets. What are your suggestions on how to fix these issues? Please don't say buy a different ML as I have spent all that I want to on the Optima V2 and accessories.

BlackMZ and APP powders in general have a residue buildup near the muzzle. Nothing i know of can fix that. Swap powders to Blackhorn209 or deal with swabbing.
One way to reduce blowby around the primer is to try a longer primer such as a standard Win209 and the Nobel 209 primer. Those are the 2 longest primers.
The other way to seal a primer is with a o-ring or shim in the primer pocket but ive always felt this is a bandaid solution especially when CVA sells a firing pin bushing shim kit for about $7. Shim the bushing out until it creates a .002-.003 crush MAX on the primer you want to use. The only negative is if you switch brand of primers you will need to adjust it again. As long as you shim the bushing using a Win209 or Nobel primer it wont ever be too tight if you switch primers. Just dont go over a .003 crush on a unfired primer.

I agree with post 2, go to BH209 and enjoy your rifle.
You may need to take a good look at your BP.
Much/all of the buildup in the BP is caused by the filthy 209 primers. They were developed for shotgun ammo, not rifle and definitely not Breech plugs. A BP needs a vent hole, but the size of the channel leading to the small vent hole should be large. IMHO, at least 5/32" it can be larger than that as long as you have a shoulder for the primer to rest on for crush fit against.

Get some Blackhorn 209 and a Blackhorn breech plug from either CVA or Western Powders.

I ordered the BH 209 kit from Western Powder yesterday. It comes with the breech plug for loose powder, wrench to set new breech plug, drill bit with handle to clean out carbon from breech plug and O-rings to seal leaks from primer blow by.

I recieved my breech plug kit on Sat. and went to the range yesterday. I wanted to give the Black MZ one more try. The stuff realy fouled my barrel and new breech plug in the concave part. Blackhorn 209 here we come. The o-ring worked great , as did the drill and handle for cleaning the primer channel. Does anyone have a pet load using BH 209 with 240gr and 250gr Hornady XTP Mag and XTP bullets?

I found a good load for my CVA Optima V2. I was getting MOA accuracy with it.
1. 90gr Blackhorn 209 powder. 2. 250gr Hornady XTP .452 bullets. 3. Federal 209 primers. 4. Harvester black Crush Rib sabots for .452 bullets.
