I have an encore 50 with a very tight Barrel. A .458 Fury will barely slide down the barrel with gut busting pressure. Barnes bullets in the supplied sabots will not even start. Hornady 250 sst in the red sabots will load but with gut busting pressure
All of this is on a clean barrel. Any suggestions?

The 458 fury was in an orange mmp sabot.

Is a sizing die out of the question?

Check the link to Modern Muzzleloader and the "size" of the bullet sabot combos. Personally I'd try black crush rib sabots and .451 + .452 bullets. link: www.modernmuzzleloader.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=9798Personally I shoot 300X.458 Speer in Harvester black crush rib sabots in my Savage MLII but I have lapped the barrel to smooth it. That bullet sabot is not tight in my 700ml and TC 50 smokers. 10

Is a sizing die out of the question? edge. No, was just hoping I would not have to. I also have an extremely tight 10 ml2 that I size for and it shoots good. May have to go that route. The barrel is an older one that had been shot mostly with pyrodex and I might need to polish it a little to get it to load. It looks bright when looking through it but I do not have a bore scope to really check it out.

They both shoot well using the crush ribs after being sized. Guess I like the 310 APB best of all. I'll try your suggestions. I wanted to try the 290 tez's with black horn.

Knurled 300 match Hunter in HBR loads smoothly on the clean barrel. Maybe by the time it is fouled it will be just right

I had the same problem with an early model SS 209x50, I ran into the Thompson (S&W to my surprise) folks at a trade show discussed the lack of accuracy I was experiencing. They said send it back, so I did. I don't know what they did to improve accuracy but it loaded the projectiles a lot easier after the service/repair. I can only assume they re-cut the barrel.

Maybe they just lapped the barrel! I did a very light lap on mine and it loads much better.

I highly doubt they recut the barrel since they hammer forge their barrels. They probably gave you a new barrel or lapped like quillen52 mentioned.

The answer to this problem for me was MMP 3 petal sabots. Dont know if they make them for .458 bullets though. My Encore went to a genuine 1 inch gun since going to them. I have shot alot of groups smaller also. It wont do it with any other sabot.

A MMP 3P-EZ sabot with a 458 bullet in it comes out to almost the same loaded OD as the MMP Orange.
