What are some of the things a person can do to improve the accuracy on a 700 Remington? I recently purchased a 700 remmy in 223 caliber and the rifle shoots pretty good for a off the shelf gun. I notice there is no clearance between the stock and barrel, and the locking lugs are rough. Does anyone have a step by step process they do to improve accuracy. I can keep my 5shot groups within a dime at 100yds but I think this rifle may do better. Thanks in advance.

I float the barrel and pillar bed all of my bolt rifles. There are lots of instructions on the interweb on how to do that. This has definitely made them more repeatable. The gun may have shot occasional smaller groups but on average it is tighter after the float and pillar bed job. Adjust the trigger to a clean pull at whatever weight you want. Work on technique to be repeatable each and every time you shoot.

I just took a dime out of my pocket and , maybe it's me , but 5 shots inside a dime with an " off the shelf " rifle is excellent .Sure , bedding may help . Good luck . chris

I shot the 223 again yesterday after relieving the barrel pressure and lapping the locking lugs. I shot 15 rounds that a nickel would cover. The only other thing I did was to lighten the poundage on the jewel trigger down to 4oz. The guys I shoot with have benchrest guns from kelbys and they were really surprised how well my rifle shot. I think I will leave well enough alone. This rifle seems to like anything you put in it as far as bullets, I have shot sierras and nosler bullets and they both shot great.

For 15 rounds that is quite good IMO.

Oh ! lighten the Jewel trigger down to 4oz ! that doesn't sound off the shelf to me . Just guessing but 5 shots inside a dime should measure ( center to center ) in the low .4s at least . your friends with benchrest guns are correct . don't worry , be happy ! chris

Kenn I would move your target out to 300 yards and make slight changes in your seating depth while watching for vertical stringing to fine tune the load, after you find the best groups you can repeat the same process with fine tuning the powder adjustment. I normally do the fine tune with the powder first but it sounds like you are really close already. For the record I don't think you really need to do anything but the ladder testing will help.
