What would a take off Rem 50 cal. blue barrel cost. My ex son in law has a older Rem. 50 cal with badly pitted barrel. He is considering replacing the barrel along with a new breech plug and bolt nose kit. He will be shooting BH 209 and T7. I would like recommendations for the BP,bolt nose kit and smith to do the work. Est. cost would be helpful as well. He is debating on whether or not to trash it and get a new gun or upgrade it.

Barrels are very cheap $25-$50
Now trouble spot is timing barrel to get sight holes on top. Then reheadspace breech plug depth. $125
Arrowhead sporting goods has great products for 209 conversion . Appx $160
I would recommend building a custom 45 with 700ml or sell and get cva accura for 50 cal basic sabot gun

He has a scope on it,no interest in iron sights. Also just wants a basic sealed sabot gun for T7 and BH 209.Is the 160+/_ for a bolt nose kit and BP installed.Do you do the work?

The work is the same no matter what the quality of the barrel is. I second Bestill's reco to build a good gun with PacNor or Brux barrel. It will handle smokeless but you can still use BH209 in it.

for what it's worth, years back I replaced a barrel on a 700 ml. Maybe I was lucky but it head spaced (hunters bolt nose kit) perfect. Now it was mentioned about the barrel timing being a bear to get right. But I never bothered my holes are probably 30 deg off but I don't care I'll never use it with iron sights and it doesn't hurt the way it shoots at all
