I got a 10 point at 140 yards with a Rem 700ML with a Douglas barrel. Used the standard 10 grains of 4759 and 50 grains of 4198 and a 275 grain Match Hunter with a fiber wad. I was about 80 feet above the deer and he was facing away so a spine/shoulder blade shot. Dropped right there. My daughter uses the same powder combo but with a Savage ML/ Brux barrel. She uses 200 SSTs with the Harvestor light blue sabot. Both 45s. She got her deer at 75 yards with a high shoulder shot that exited, same result. No tracking. Interestingly I put a new bushing plug in her gun at this point made just for Win primers. Tried a Fed 209A and the bolt would not go down far enough to permit it to fire at all. Put a Win in and it did. I know the Feds are hotter and I use it for most but the Wins seem more uniform in size so had the BP made for that. Using the duplex hopefully it will be OK. Will test it sometime in the real cold, near 60 today here. She passed on 4 small bucks since they were not bigger than her best. Glad to see that. She would have liked to have taken the 10 point but was not here on Monday. Just glad she can get out with me on occasion. Just a father bragging but she has taken 12 deer, all that she shot at and no tracking. She really likes that high shoulder shot. All with SMLs.

Awesome! Good report and congratulations to you both. I'll bet your load kicks harder than her load thus your deer was probably deader. I don't think I want either of you shooting at me.

Jim, life is good! For you, 2018 will be a lot better. Your work has/ had to be so stressful!

Actually I never had any stress in my job. I think has to have more intelligence than I possess to feel stress. Got a great wife that helps keep me grounded. It will be even better in 5 days. Actually I maybe should have retired earlier but enjoyed what I did and did not want to give it up. My wife and kids helped encourage me to leave early. I will miss my excellent co-workers. I can now do anything I want until the money runs out or my time does. Hopefully awhile for both.

I’m confused a bit. Your topic heading says to MLs. Then you mention rem 700? Is that a type of muzzleloader or high powered rifle? I have a Savage I’ve been using for 12 years. And my knowledge of rifles is limited lol

Dang: I may not have been as clear as intended. The Remington 700 ML started as a Rem factory muzzleloader. It was then rebarreled, restocked, different breech plug etc. so that it can and does use smokeless powder. It is still capable of using Black Horn powder but I do not do so. The prior owner did in his long range competitions. I bought the completed/altered firearm from him. My daughters ML started as a factory Savage .50 smokeless muzzleloader. I had a Brux barrel put on it with a Savage breech plug. I restocked it and added a SSS trigger. So both started as muzzleloaders but now have .45 barrels that I only use smokeless powders in but the barrels and breech plugs are built to do that. They both use 209 shotgun primers. They are both quite accurate, not bench rest accurate but under 1 moa. Hope that helps. Sorry about the confusion.
