I want work up a load that my 9 year old son can shoot. I have some t/c cheap shot sabots that I figured would work well at lower velocities. I also have some 777 50 gr. Pellets. Do you think 1 pellet would push these 240gr. bullets fast enough to kill a deer? I’m thinking 75 to 100 yds would be the absolute max. I already have the pellets and want to use them but if need be I can get some loose powder and go up to 60 or 70 gr.
Thanks

I’m using 60 grain by volume of BH209 in a 700 ML 45cal using a 200 grain PR bullet. My son is 7 and is having no problem shooting it. It only has muzzle jump hardly any recoil at all. Muzzleloader hasn’t opened here yet so I haven’t got to try it out when we I do I’ll post it on here.

A bullet that looks good for a low recoil load is the 250g Deep Curl. Not only does testing reveal it works good at low speed, it is also currently on sale for only 25¢ each.

Well I got some bh209 and loaded up 60gr but it delay fired. I should have done my homework because now I realize I don’t have the correct breech plug. I have a 700ml with the old 209 plug that allows a lot of blowback. I went ahead and shot it a few times with one 777 pellet and it shoots good with no noticeable recoil I’m just concerned about knockdown power.
Is it possible to replace only the nipple or do you have to do the whole package (bolt face, plug, firing pin and whatever else)?
I also have an old Knight Wolverine that shoots 209 in the red sleeves but it has a lot of blowback too. Maybe there is a simple conversion for this gun?
Either way season starts next Saturday so time is running short. Any ideas?
Thanks

Yes a 50g pellet and a 240 gr soft lead flat point should kill a deer easily with a rib shot. You may not get an exit depending on angle but it has as much energy as a PRB with a modest load and that is plenty. Shoot them in the ribs and they will die PDQ. 10

Just wanted to update on this load My son shot a good 9 pointer at about 50 yards. He hit it low in the shoulder which is something I was worried about but it still got the job done, it ran about 150 yards. He was excited about it.
Thanks

My son shot a doe at 60yds 80 grs 777 and a 180 pr bullet, clearly made a good shot no blood no deer would not recommend that bullet,no expansion

With no deer or recovery how did you determine no expansion? What do you imagine a semi soft lead 40cal 180gr tipped bullet is going to do at that speed other than expand? Here is a hint. This is its larger PR QT 40cal 250gr counterpart with 80gr load of BH209. I cant imagine it was moving any faster than your 180gr.

They were designed to stay inside (not exit) so when folks wanted 2 holes they made the Dead Center version. I killed a truck load of deer with both bullets and they work superbly at BP/SUB velocities. If your son clearly made a " good shot" the deer died within 15 seconds of being hit.

I know......I'm late to the party!!!!!!
A Barnes 200gr or 225gr XPB would work good for these loads. A 200gr XPB will expand to around 750fps, 225gr XPB down to around 1000fps. Either one with 60 - 70 grs of BH209 should be good, as long as the accuracy is there.
