Been thinking more and more that it would be fun to have one. Thinking I'd like to build one for a few reasons. First, it's easier for me to spend a little here and there...plus I enjoy the "diy" aspect even though I'm thinking it's not going to require the one-off parts of a SML build. I'm in no rush either but I figure I need to start somewhere. A quick google search seems Aero lowers are popular but beyond that, I have no clue what is good or bad. Nor do I even know what I'll need besides the obvious stuff.
Little help pointing me in the right direction?

I have an Aero Precision OEM that I bought from Brownell's. The Brownell's OEM AR is basically the upper, lower, internal parts and a Ballistic Advantage 5.56 16" barrel. Ballistic Advantage and Aero Precision are sister companies. I opted for this route, as it allowed me to install the furniture and accessories of my choice. Buying a fully assembled rifle and discarding parts seemed a waste. Have you checked out the Aero Precision's website? It has many offerings of complete lower and upper assemblies. I highly recommend upgrading from a standard Mil-Spec trigger. I just recently completed a .458 SOCOM build using an AP upper and handguard. The .458 barrel is from another mfr. My 5.56 AP shoots very well. Below is my BA 5.56 standard barrel and Hornady's 75g Superformance at 100 yds. I've easily shot this gun out to 350 yards. I'm sure it's good for more distance, but that is my range limit. I built this rifle for hunting deer, however I use a Hornady 70 gr GMX bullet for hunting.

That's a lot of good advice from psm, buying parts only to discard for better is fruitless. Uppers and lowers are just basically the means to hold the two things that make an AR accurate regarding the gun. As has been discussed before the trigger and the barrel are likely most important to overall accuracy. I did notice psm is shooting high end ammunition and there's the third leg of the triad for an accurate AR.

Thanks for the reply guys. I did a little more patrolling on Aero's website and then started looking into triggers. I got lost on the triggers...small pin, large pin, two stage, single stage. Just because a trigger costs $200 doesn't make it what I want/need. I assume different applications? So what's what with the trigger assemblies?

There are 2 pin sizes as you noticed, the small pin being most common. When you buy the lower it will be designated as small most likely. I shoot Timney single stage which breaks at 3 lbs. Suits my style of shooting many prefer two stage triggers and Geissle makes some premier 2stage triggers. Barrel wise i like Criterion but there are many good rifle barrels being produced at reasonable prices.

Thanks again for the replies guys. Was reading some good articles on triggers and such. Then I thought to myself, I need to check local laws. Turns out the things NY think make a firearm into an illegal assault weapon are pretty ludicrous. Now I'm questioning if it's even worth the money or time, might just build another SML.
