Last year I came into a blued .50 cal Rem 700 ML that still shoots well. I want to install a Hunter bolt nose and breechplug and shoot it as a black powder/BH209 gun for the time being until I get the funds for a conversion. So correct me if I am wrong, but the list that I need to accurize and convert to smokeless is: breech plug, barrel, recoil lug, and stock? I can do the bedding job myself as I did a poured pillar, action, and bottom metal bedding job on my 700 .270 Win rifle a couple of years ago.
I started reading here about the conversion a couple of years ago, but it seems a few things have changed/improved since then. What is the best breech plug option to go with now?

Are you wanting info on doing boltnose kit and utilizing factory barrel for blackpowder or subs?
Or you wanting to do a 45 cal conversion?

I want to shoot Blackhorn 209 for the time being while I save up money for the .45 cal smokeless conversion. The gun is still a factory .50 cal and it will probably take at least a year or so to save up for the conversion. I think I read somewhere that Hunter offers a smoker kit with the longer smokeless nose and a shortened black powder plug for those in my situation. Is that correct?

So what are everyone's thoughts on the Mcgowan barrels? I've looked into them before on centerfire builds. They look like a good product at a great price, but I don't have any experience with them.

My McGowen is a shooter and takes Barnes Tez and Parker right out of package ... its a good barrel however I've heard several complaints lately about mcgowen.. having another Sml built right now and am going with a Brux.

The McGowan barrel works very well and for hunting situations works great. Problem with McGowan barrel from what I've seen have a chocked muzzle which makes it difficult to size. If your only find to use 200 SST with sabots or any saboted bullet then you'll be completely fine. Problem with sabotless and sizing is trying to get single powder loads to ignite. People are moving away from duplex loads (booster powder and a main charge powder).
For what it's worth I'd get a Brux get the new ignition system and spend the rest of your money on scouting for deer. I went the same route your thinking of and in the end I ended up spending a lot more than trying to save money.
