I have recently caught the sml bug. I have a handi-rifle and am keeping my eyes open for a 45-70 barrel, I think nef no longer has the barrel program or I would buy a new one. I have a few questions that I know some of you can answer.
Do any of you know a good place to find one of these barrels?
What breech plug do I need and where can I get it?
What would the ignition system be?
How difficult is the breech plug install? I would like to do it myself if you think the average person can. Does anyone have a video of the plug being installed?
If it is too difficult for the average person who would you recommend doing the work for me?
Does anyone have these converted barrels already made and ready for sale?
I am a newbie here so please don't assume I already know anything. All of your thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

Luke at arrowhead sporting goods can fix you up if you buy the barrel .. he can do the machine work and install his arrowhead plug . You can go 209 ignition or lrmp now i believe. There was a hnr 45 70 in the forsale section here . Its under the buy sell section.

I've also been wondering about how I would store the ramrod on this conversion. The two piece stock presents a problem here because of the fore end screw. It needs to be attached to the gun somehow I don't want to carry it separately when hunting

No idea, but look into how they handled it with the huntsman and sidekick. Personally I use a shock corded ramrod for hunting. Stows in my pack nice and neat.

The huntsman appears to use some kind of telescoping rod that don't have very good reviews. Where would I find one like yours?

I carry the folding "loading" ram rod in a sheath on lanyard around my neck. right with whatever ignition used. Very handy. 10

I should add, when I'm in a blind or stand, I have the rod out and engaged, ready in case it's needed.

The lrmp plug is much more expensive than the 209 plug at arrowhead (about $200 vs $50). Do you think it is worth the difference? Thanks

its the cost of the modules that come with it. Make CF conversions very simple

Thanks Asg209 plug with bushing and lock ring is basically $90 The lrmp comes with modules so plug itself is basically same money. The lrmp system is good but 209 is as well basically personal preference. The lrmp is easier to set up for 100% seal but done properly 209 will seal perfect.

The lrmp is easier to set up for 100% seal but done properly 209 will seal perfect. Especially in a hinger that won't be pushing the envelope. Although if I was doing a hinger, I'd be looking long and hard at going with direct ignition with screw in modules.

Ok guys I got a 45-70 barrel for my handi and I'm anxious to get the conversion done. I can get the lrmp plug installed for $325 including 20 modules and a depriming station or 209 plug installed for $185 by Luke. Is the lrmp system worth the extra $? I know some of you guys have experience with one or both of these systems and I would very much appreciate your thoughts.
Thanks

Thanks If you can get a hold of Luke or Bestill they would have the best knowledge about your question. I've been toying around with getting mine converted to the lrmp but I haven't seen enough input to convince me to switch. The other question is what are you planning on shooting? Sabots? Sabotless? Want to shoot straight charges? How heavy of bullets are you going to shoot? What are your expectations for your new rifle? Good luck

Thanks I've got a Handi with a SMI 45 barrel and a ASG 209 plug and a CVA Scout with a ASG LRP plug....What you have is a good platform for a solid hunting rifle.....I personally like both ignition systems about the same in these guns... My opinion is if you're wanting to shoot sabotless single powder loads with lighter bullets I would spend the extra money and get the LRP plug....If you want to shoot sabots or duplex loads sabotless spend the extra money on gunpowder...

Ok thanks for the good info. I'll probably go with the 209 plug.

I just sent my barrel off to be converted now I need your guys help so that I'm ready to shoot when I get it back. I'm getting the 209 arrowhead plug installed and on Luke's suggestion I've ordered some 200gr sst and harvester smooth sabots. Which powder do you recommend and how much to start with? What is the maximum charge with this setup? From reading in the forums looks like a lot of people are using imr4198 so I'm thinking of starting with about 50gr of that pending your suggestions Again I am new to sml so I just want to keep it pretty simple for now Thanks

If you want to keep it simple, try any where from 52-60 grains of H4198 and bullet and sabot you mentioned above.
It seems like most people that shoot this set up end up between 54 to 58 grains of H4198.
Mine shoots 56 grns the best. One of my hunting buddies has one and his likes 58 grains best.
Good luck and enjoy and be safe..

Thanks for the good info. Now for how to measure the powder. I don't have any of this equipment. What is the best low cost way to do this? People seem to really like the Lee dippers but I should probably also have a scale to make sure it is correct from time to time. Am I right or do you think I would be ok with only the dippers? Would you recommend a digital scale or a balance beam?
Thanks

Lee safety scale has also proven accurate and about $24. It's what I use.
