I'm looking to get a pistol for my wife. I'm looking hard at the Ruger LC9 or Springfield XDS. My question is, are the action springs lighter on a smaller caliber? My full size XD45 is real hard for her to rack. Would a 9mm be easier?

Take a look at a M&P Shield. Both my wife and sister have one and have no problem racking the slide. And yes I do think it's easier than a 45.

If going with semi automatic definitely try to test the slide in the shop and if still set on buying a semi get something without an external safety. No need trying to remember if safe is off or on when a threat appears.
I solved the too hard to rack the slide by buying my wife a S&W revolver in .38. Keeps it so much simpler.
I still think she would opt for the full chocked 12ga with #4's if a dirtball came in the house.

The thought of getting a revolver has crossed my mind. I second the external safety my XD does not have one.

Just got a ruger lc9s for my wife. She is on the weak side, but can rack the slide easily. Best trigger on a semi. Easy for a novice to learn to shoot. Great gun at a great price. Leftyml

Glock 42 or 43 might be worth a look.

Glock 42 or 43 might be worth a look. Glock 42 is one of the softest shooting pistols I've used. My hand swallows it and I don't have big hands. That is what drove me to a S&W Shield for carry during the warm part of the year.

Glock 43 is 380 ACP? Is really a good caliber for defense if your local life is on the line? I'm thinking 9mm or 38 Special minimum. Comments?

FWIW and a disclaimer I'm a Sig Sauer fan. Take a look at the Sig P938 w/ the extended 7 rd magazine.

The only guy I know that killed a guy with a .380 says it works fine. Bullets have come a long way. That is why the 9x19mm is gaining its place back over bigger rounds. The Army went away from the .38 Special because it wasn't killing well in the Philippines. They also wanted to be able to stop horses. That depended on big round nosed slugs for both puposes. For the next 90 years the idea persisted that you needed to shoot a big gun to be lethal because you do need that when you shoot ball ammo. Just like rifle bullets have made smaller rifles far more effective than they once were the same goes for pistols

I'd let her handle one and see how it fits her hand, if possible shoot one at a range.

Getting a pistol for the wife is something I did 3 yrs ago. If your wife wants to put the time in and be "one with the gun" I would leave the door wide open for what to use. Just as I would myself or any of you that shoot a ton and have experience with guns. My wife is a newb and doesn't put the time in she should. Got her a ruger LCR. No slide to rack. No safety to worry about. Long DBL action trigger pull so if the gun goes off she meant it. Not MY 1st choice for myself bit it fits her style and I do not worry that she will have a malfunction she can't deal with yet still have 5 sure rounds....probably at very close quarters where shooting accurately isn't paramount. I stumbled into a deal on a Kimber micro 9. She likes the way it fits her hand and can run the slide with ease. Now to get on the range with it. Any suggestions as to what weight ammo would be good in a such a short barrel? I picked up two boxes of 115 gr. FMJ

Velocity is a double edged sword. It causes more recoil than bullet weight does but as a result creates more energy than bullet weight. If you can find a 147gn that isn't +P it will be less snappy than 115gn. I don't shoot anything but 124gn or 147gn in the Shield.

When my wife and i got married we purchased handguns for eachother. I purchased a Ruger LCP for her, and she got me a Ruger LCR in .357 mag. The LCP is quite easy to rack a round into. Only complaint I have about it is that it was definitely built for smaller hands. because of it's small size and lite weight I have bruised my hand shooting it, and I do not believe my hands are any larger than average. That is not a problem for smaller hands though. My wife shoots it fine, mt 12 year old step daughter has fired it, and my neighbors daughters have both shot it without any of them getting bruised like me.

Take her to gun shop let her handle as many as she can. When her life depends on it it should be something that's completely comfortable and accurate for her
