One of my reasons for getting a Lyman Digital Bore Scope was to check a particular barrel to see why it would never group worth a hoot. Three or four hundred rounds were sent downrange and the best it ever did was a 3/4" 3-shot group. That group turned out to be pure luck because identical loads later got over two inches.
The scope shows one side of the throat/lands being just what one would want to see, but the opposite side shows a horror story of wear. The chamber was obviously not cut correctly. I'm amazed the bullets didn't keyhole, as bad as that area looks.
The bad part of the barrel is around an inch, and I wouldn't want to attempt a set back that distance with this chambering. At the time I got it, I realized that it was losing popularity and got enough brass to last a life time.
This is a Montana Rifle Company Model 1999 which is a heavy copy of the Win Mod 70. I'm considering rebarreling it, but know of NO 'smiths around here who can do it. Any suggestions?

Any smith that knows how to rebarrel can handle a 1999. I would mail it before trying to settle on a local guy. Sometimes there is local talent but you usually know about them. Where are you located?
Eddie Fosnsaugh was a pleasure to deal with and built me a great rifle. Mike Bryant is the same. Chad Dixon is in a league by himself but it gets done the Chad way. There are other great smiths I haven't done business with that I wouldn't hesitate to use.
