I spoke with a game warden a few weeks ago and he said that we lost 90% of our squirrels in Va year before last..No mast and with the cold weather many starved to death. I see 3 or 4 in my backyard where I used to see 20 or 30.Sad..I would rather eat squirrel than venison any day.

They always have something to eat.

By the voting records, I thought the squirrel population was waaay up in Eastern and Northern Virginia! Agree with the meat flavor, but I'd rather skin a deer than a squirrel any day.

Here in the Northern Neck and Middle peninsula the population is good. Places where they should be they are plenty. Even with a 90% winterkill they reproduce to carrying capacity in 1 season. Most of the time "game wardens" hardly know the law and know even less about wildlife biology. Seems around here the possum police are mostly hunter hating ticket machines and don't know anything about wildlife biology. You need to talk to a biologist to find out what the real scoop is. Yeah, I am in Eastern VA too. 10
