Just bought an 870 tactical for the office. 18.5 in barrel 6 rd mag capacity with Rem chokes. I wish screw in chokes were more common on (riot guns). I like the Mossberg 590 A1 also but they don't offer them with tubes. Improved cylinder has it's place but I like the way a modified or improved modified shoot 00 or #4 buck.

At close range I don't it makes much difference which choke you shoot buckshot with out of a 12 ga. Mike

Well that's true, but it's nice to squeeze another few yards out on the other end. 161

There has been a trend in LEO tactics with shotgun. While 00 buck is still the load of choice for up close and personal, many departments also practice with slugs. This gives the operator the option of longer range engagement and use against barriers with more penetration. Around here you see more and more departments going to rifle sights on shotguns. One local department recently upgraded their 870s with rifle sights (XS) and a side receiver caddy (4 round, the 6 round was not compatable with some of the vehicle racks in the older cars). They have 6 rounds of low recoil 00 (wussies) in the mag (they do not have a round in the chamber while in the vehicle rack) and 4 slug rounds in the caddy (again low recoil). For qualification the have to hit a B-27 target at 50yds with slugs and do practice/attempt out to 100yds.

Here in Iowa we qualify on the FBI Q target 2 slugs at 50 yards one standing one kneeling unsupported. 5 at 25 yards 4 at 15 yards then 5 00 buck at 10 yards. All starting with an empty gun then combat load under time. I do like the thought of familiarization at 100 yards. This is just me talking but I still think a shotgun should have a bead on the end of the barrel. Slugs have there place and are useful I just think rifle sights are harder to pick up in low light. A bead is plenty accurate enough for a foster slug and a quicker reflex sight. A modified choke would still shoot slugs and give a little tighter pattern with shot. We issue rifles to the Deputies when they need to reach out a touch somebody. Just thoughts not saying I'm right. I'd like to have a Remington 1100 TAC4 of my own with an extra full to shoot turkeys with.
