I have a chance to buy the above Brux barrel standard Palma contour 30"" long finish at 28". 1-20 twist. If I decide to buy could this barrel be threaded for a Savage model 12 short action cut and crowned to 28" and a Luke breech plug installed. I have watched video's and feel I'd like to try my hand at installing it myself. Thanks Lou

I think that would be a good choice. Does the action have the Accutrigger?

I think that contour is a bit light for smokeless muzzleloading but everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I typically don't use Palma contours because the shank ends and tapers very quickly.

I agree about the contour, was just commenting on the action. Sorry.

Lou, What price are you getting on it? Unless you're getting a steal, it'd just be easier to buy one of the blanks I'm selling that's already contoured for the right shank size.
Also, make sure the barrel is lapped for a MZ. You can get in trouble with some barrel makers if the barrel was lapped for a CF and they put a choke in it.

Everyone, Thanks for the heads up. That is why I love this sight everyone is very honest and helpful especially for some one like me that doesn't know S%#@! Yes it has the accu-trigger Boyd's TH stock. The gentleman that is selling the barrel said he bought it for a SML build for some one and they backed out. I am sure glad I asked before I leaped into this. Had I bought it I was going to sit on it till I was in a better position to complete the build. Luke I will contact you when I am ready The price I was going to pay was $320.00 shipped for the Brux SS barrel, and I liked the idea of a 28" barrel for a bench gun not for hunting

Requirements for assembling a Smokeless muzzle loader your self...
A vise 2 blocks of wood with "V" notches in them to hold barrel. 1 hand..2 hands optional...
It is very easy to build a SML yourself. You be glad you did.

I have a barrel vise and a collar removal tool and I have watched the video over and over, now the bull nose kit may be a problem. So I will send it out to get that done. I do have two hand but they are both left LOL. One thing how does one know what way to turn to remove the barrel? are they threaded clockwise or counter clockwise. I want to buy bullets and I have some powder that I read on posts that people are using. I see where 4198 seem to be a good powder? Isn't this powder hard to ignite? It seem when I first got a SML'er they said this. I have a lot too learn. Bear with me I have more questions. Lou

The barrel is threaded the same as any other application clockwise to tighten and counter clockwise to loosen (righty tighty, lefty loosey). I don't shoot in sub zero temps but down to 35 degrees using IMR4198 and a Win 209 primer I've had nothing but bang. I haven't done it but now having a bolt gun and seeing the assembly I don't think it would be too hard to do yourself. I'm told the Savage bolt nose kit from Luke is easy and straight foward. But then I've never done it. Others with more experience will chime in.

I second passing on the Palma for SML. Great contour if you are looking for a mid weight CF gun in a medium bore; just used two of them for that purpose. There just isn't enough shank for me to use it on an SML. I'd take Luke up on the barrel buy.

Pay Luke to install the 700 ML 209 bolt nose when you buy it from him. 4198 ignites easily. I'd go with a little bigger contour also.

That is exactly what I am going to do get Luke to install the bull nose kit. And I will get a barrel from Luke I want to thank everyone who gave me good advise on the barrel. I got everything from Luke for my Remington 700 ML build. I can't wait to get it. I hunt in a shotgun only state so I use a ML'er all the time for both seasons. Lou

Hope nobody minds me slightly hijacking this post. If building a smokeless on a remington action, what is the favorite barrel contour of the guys who have been there, and done that?
I see the sendero contour is fairly popular - anything better for a hunting rifle?

My favorite for a hunting gun is a Douglas 5A. I have one on my .451 barrel and it comes in under 10# and still shoots great. I'll likely use it or a #5 for my .40 build later this year. If you do that one I recommend lengthening the cylinder to 5" as I did but I don't think it's a dealer breaker if you don't. Just don't load it like a maniac.
I also have a custom contour that is similar to a Krieger HV and it is just too heavy in general. I went with 28" on that tube and the gun is front heavy, even on a BR setup. It's getting bobbed to 25" soon. That will make it handle better but it is still too heavy to hunt with IMO. I built it as a range gun to test bullets with though.

So in your opinion what kind of weight difference is there between a 5a and sendero build? I don't want to build a pig, but want it to be plenty safe aswell.

Thank you Sir. To complicate things I'm a Canadian so getting the brands of barrels discussed on here is a hassle - especially with our dollar in the toilet. That said there are several excellent Canadian barrel makers willing to machine whatever contour I ask for. I appreciate the help,

If possible you may want to try and do what my friend in Canada and I do I buy for him and have it shipped to his friend across the border and he goes and picks the things up. May not be kosher but neither he nor I care. Too d**n many BS gun laws now. Good Luck
