I just purchased my first semi-auto pistol for in home defense and as a carry option. I chose the Springfield XD45 4" model. I believe this is the original XD not the XDM and definitely not the XDS or Mod.2 I also picked up four boxes of Blazer Brass 230gr.FMJ's to get a feel for the gun. Anybody have any opinions good or bad on my choice?

Never carried one. They seem solid, and have a great following. Seem big and blocky to me, more so than Glocks, but shoot nice. I too am in the market for something new. Please keep your opinion and experience with it coming. I am interested to hear it. Good luck.

That's a lot of gun. Shoot it often and dry fire even more.

I compared it a Glock G36 and they felt about the same in my hands. The Glock may have been a little lighter. As for the dry firing is it ok to dry fire it with out a snap cap? I read the manual and it refers to using them but does not actually state weather or not its ok to not use them.

My buddy has this gun and it is very reliable with even the cheapest ammo. He is not a very good shot so I cannot say how accurate it is. I have shot a few mags with it on silhoettes and was easy to hit with at 15 yds.
Always fun getting a new gun. Good luck.

Big difference in grip size.

Correction it may have been a G30 not a G36 I looked at so many it's hard to keep them straight. It will most likely be Friday before I get it out to the range and fire it. I'm stoked.

First outing with the XD has proven to be a good time but has raised some questions. Distance was 15 paces which for me is a touch under 15 yds. Using my rifle targets which has I think a 4 inch diamond in the center I would say half of my shots were in the diamond and the rest were low. Manual says sights are calibrated so that your shot should land on top of the front sight. However it does state a distance. I very well could be me too this is my first pistol. I'm an ok shot with my Revolver at 25 yds. Is it possible that it is meant for lighter ammo? I'm going to go through my 200 rds. quickly.

Everyone holds and shoots handguns differently. These differences, using a short barreled pistol, are much more pronounced on a target than if you and I both shot s rifle off a rest. If you have adjustable sights this is a non issue and you can zero with what you eventually want to carry.
Just keep shooting and concentrating on good form. Take a while to get used to a brand new gun in terms of all the dynamics. Sight picture, recoil, trigger break, etc. When you conclude that you are comfortable, start making adjustments.

I picked up a box of Winchester SXZ 230 gr. JHP for it today. Weather supposed to be warm this weekend hope to get back to the range and do more shooting. Any thoughts on the Winchester SXZ ammo? It has a lubealox coating any concerns with this?

Second range session the Winchesters shoot about the same as the Blazer Brass. Kind of low at 15 paces. On a better note I tried the Hornady American Gunner 185 gr. XTP they shoot lights out at 15 paces. Ten shots in the X ring. Which make me happy since my end game is to use the Barnes Tac-XP. 230's seem to be zeroed about 10 paces.

Most pistol sights are going to be spot on at close to 7yds.

OK good to know. I find my self wondering how people are hitting 25 yd. Steels with this pistol. I see videos all over the place. Seem accurate enough I guess if you know the drop.
