If the rifle says ".22LR" but "shorts" and "longs" will chamber, will there be an issue with shooting them in a bolt action rifle? Will it cause any damage? Years ago, it seems every .22 was stamped "short, long or long rifle. Thanks...BOBinIN

IMO, you can always use the shorter cartridge but not vise versa, so if it labelled LR then shorts are fine but labelled short and Longs are a no- no. edge. PS you MAY want to clean after using a shorter round and then going longer

Edge is correct on both his statements. Same principle of shooting 38's in a .357 mag or 44 spec in a 44 mag....but not vice versa.
The shorter cartridges will foul the area where the longer cartridges would need to be inserted. Seen this with both my .357 mags after a bunch of 38's fired and with my Ruger 10/22 and Mark II pistol in 22 LR. I feed shorts in them sometimes singly and if I fire a bunch of them, the Longs and long rifles will feed harder. Sometimes enough where it fails to feed and they will jamb. In the pistols, a .357 round will always hang up in the cylinder after shooting a bunch of 38's. Usually you can use your thumb and get them to go in but it's best to clean good, like Edge said, if you are going from shooting the shorter rounds and stepping up to longer ones.
Not a dumb question. Always ask.

I think a word of caution should be made about 22 mag. I know it's not in the topic, but I had to use difficultly removing a22 long round that was placed in a 22 mag break action. The rim on the long was about .0015" smaller than the mag and allowed it to go past the ejector.

Yeah, the mag and the LR/L/S/CB are dimensionally different. They don't share common headspace either. You can't get a mag into the smaller chamber but you can get a standard round into a mag chamber.
