So I'm at a stand still on my 243 and I can't think of the "right" scope. I have a Nikon Prostaff 5 3.5-14x40 XR Custom Turret scope on my McRem Smokeless Muzzleloader and been thinking I would swap the scope off it and put on my 243, then get a scope with the BDC reticle for my sml for hunting purposes. Yet I still like the idea of leaving my Nikon on my McRem and getting a different scope for my 243.
I really want to use the 243 for learning how to dial and shoot and carry what I learn over to the sml. So then I think I could get the SWFA SS 10x42 MilDot for the 243. I want to learn long range with 243 and set it up as such. I've looked at some of the Vortex scopes but started to feel the clarity isn't as good as I remember. I feel my Nikon is better. Not sure what I want to spend but generally I can't afford to spend a ton because I do have young kids, a wife, and child support.
Just don't know what to do right now I'm rambling and thinking out loud so to speak.
I have a Remington 700 SPS Varmint 243 26" barrel.

The SS optics are supposed to be good buys. I keep considering one for my rimfire trainer so I dont have to swap optics so often.

I've had some of Nikon's better scopes and use Nikon Premier LXL binos. I have shot a half a dozen Vortex Viper rifle optics and owned the Viper series binos too just to see how they compared. I feel like when comparing comparable models the Nikon's are better. That is not to say the Vortex is not as good but Nikon usually looks flatter and has better color.

Comparing a Nikon Monarch against a Vortex Viper series and I give the nod to the Vortexs by a hair... I've owned a bunch of Nikons a recently went to the Viper series... The lower end Vortexs , Diamondbacks and below don't compare with the Nikon Buckmasters and the old model Prostaffs....I've found both to be tough enough...Scope opions are like you know what...everybody has got one.. Agreed, everyone had different opinions. I still maintain a rifle scope only needs optics good enough to see the target clearly. It needs good adjustments above all else. Birders use binos and spotting scopes, as should hunters. Scopes are just irons with magnification.

I should have been more clear, just like 7mm freak said when you compare low end vortex to like models in the Nikon I feel the Nikon is better. I looked at some higher end vortex and they are nice just trying to decide what I need to do.

I suppose that they are probably not as clear as some but the Bushnell Elite has withstood some pretty stout loads in my gun and they can be had with adjustable turrets at reasonable prices.

I suppose that they are probably not as clear as some but the Bushnell Elite has withstood some pretty stout loads in my gun and they can be had with adjustable turrets at reasonable prices. Dollar for dollar the Bushnell Elite line is the best buy out there. The Elite Tactical line is even better when it comes to a few of them. I just spent the day building and AR for a guy that works for me and then shooting it with a Bushnell Elite Tactical 6-24x50mm G2; very good optic all things considered although it does not perform as well at 23-24x as the rest of the power range. I will very likely buy one or the 3-12x44mm G2 for my .22LR trainer as they are one of the few optics that have the ability to focus inside of 25m. This is the sixth one of the Bushnell Elite Tactical I have used ( one fixed 10x, several 3.5-21x50s in HDMR and ERS, and this 6-24x50mm G2) and I would recommend them to anyone wanting a serious optic but doesn't have a budget for an Alpha optic. I have used a lot of the Elite 3200 and 4200 optics as well and they are great for MPBR zero hunting guns.
