I hunted pretty long this years gun season. I say long but not hard...Those of you who know me know I hunt from a heated shack So I cant claim hard and wont. I am very concerned with the lack of deer I am seeing. normally 15 to 20 deer a day...this year in 4 days I only seen 8 different deer...as I said VERY concerned. Passed on 4 mature doe's with a small one early on. Only seen 1 fawn and 1 yearling. I think a couple of doe's may have gotten shot. I decided early on that my meat deer would be a buck....hopefully a mature deer. Passed on everything until Friday afternoon. There is this nice forkhorn we calle Forky...wonder why..lol. This guy is a hoot to watch...very muscular ..and VERY tall...Gonna be a great deer...if the dummy don't get killed this year. I was out in the shack on Friday all day. watching ...at 4 the doe's and the yearling came out...2 were missing. I watched and debated...but restrained myself. They were out at 190yds...let em go...still season left. And at 410 Forky came strutting out like he owned the place...What a character. and I was glassing him..looked a little behind him seconds later.. Here came this guy. Looked him over decided to make the shot..75yds. Bangflop. He is a nice old fella...long gray snout...pot belly....and his rack seems to be on the shrinking side. 10pt with one broken off... nice mass on the bases...A little over 5 inches. Kind of sad to bring the old fella in. But I been thinking...he got the rut in..fighting and breeding some of the doe's and then relaxing and hanging out with Forky....Couldn't have been a better way to "Retire with Dignity" Thanks For Reading Drop

Nice job, better to be harvested and used than killed on a road. Your respect for the animal is admirable.

Awesome deer, congrats you know the good set hunters from the bad when deer numbers are down. The good ones still manage to get it done.

Taking that older buck was real trophy management . He has made his contribution to the herd's gene pool over the years and has years of wisdom in survival . Great job .

Russ,
Great story and well written. Interesting how thoughts and values change when the "old" modifier is thrown into the mix.
Nice deer and well deserved.
Best,
Mike
